laptop upgrade help

Thanks for that.
One question, I have been reading about windows on first install aligning the SSD correctly, would this take effect with a clone or would I be better to forget all the Dell software and just go for a clean install from an ISO, providing the OEM windows key works

I have always done clean installs as I think its a better option and always good to start with a clean OS then install just what you need and not what comes stuffed on the laptop.

Windows 10 will be out in a couple of weeks. Why don't you wait for that, and do a clean install?

you need to upgrade from a previous OS (win 7 or 8.1) before you can do a clean install of windows 10 and reading under the windows 10 post Microsoft has disabled the key used to install the ISO so you cannot install the preview version either.

You do an in-place upgrade so it activates your hardware, then you blow it away and do a clean install.

The laptop came with OEM windows 8, it was then updated to 8.1 via windows update.
I'm hoping that if I do a clean 8.1 ISO install that the OEM key will work and allow the 10 upgrade.

I have a laptop that came with windows 8 and upgraded to a SSD.

I used the Microsoft 8.1 tool to download the ISO and create a USB stick, before doing anything I got the OS key as well.

link to the tool is here

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

during the 8.1 install try your OS key, if it doesn't work use one of the place holder keys to get it installed and then change to your OS key after.

they are below

core: 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT
pro: XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

I cant remember which key I used on my laptop when installing the SSD and doing a clean install of 8.1 but I did get it done using 1 of the above methods.

use clonezilla . i used it to clone my entire disk drive which i duplicate to another disk.

i use it for everything, usb , hard drives

Update.
The SSD arrived on time, well packaged and with a pack of Haribo... thanks OCUK.
It was fitted in about 10 mins and the Win 8.1 install done via ISO, it picked up the serial somehow from the hardware and was completed and auto activated in approx 15 mins.
All is now well and the somewhat tired laptop now flies.
thanks for the advice :)
