Large Hadron Collider

Or if you have no knowledge of the relevant physics you can think about it from psychological/humanitarian point of view. Why would several thousands of physicists want to come together and make a machine capable of destroying the earth? They wouldn't.

Yes, but a lot of people don't think that way. They don't sit down and consider all the reasonable possibilities, they're governed by instant knee-jerk reactions. When you're scared, you don't always have the nouse to be able to sit down and figure out the alternatives.

Whatever way you look at it it's nonsense

It's a matter of perspective. We have the privileged position of being able to know more about it and not be concerned. Those people who don't research things on the internet, who read the news, who don't have even a basic knowledge of physics or the benefits such research can reap are more likely to be frightened. We can't say "if I were in their position I wouldn't be frightened" since we'd be in a completely different culture with a different mindset.

This is exactly why the media need to take more responsibility.

with the forces involved it could still be nasty if it does go wrong

i dont mean "sucks us all into a black hole" kind of wrong

but the same sort of going wrong that happened at chernobyl. human error somewhere in the designs or in the testing

Chernobyl was a result of a chain of events resulting from catastrophic human error. The test leading up to the steam explosion was delayed as well meaning the team that was meant to be doing it during the day were not actually present at night and the night shift crew were not aware fully of what the test was about.

LHC doesn't have these kinds of things to worry about, there are no safety features that have been overlooked like there was with Chernobyl (the 45second power generation during turbine spindown was falsely approved and ran for 2 years for example before the incident). It's also a project funded by many countries around the globe so has the best people ensuring nothing goes wrong so nothing will go wrong.

Reading this thread would make you think that they've buggered it up or something. Constant deja-vu. Reads like a scratched record.

PK!
