I've got a Pioneer 50" plasma but unfortunately 1 of the HDMI sockets has stopped working. As there are only 2 I have to swap cables every time I switch from SAT to DVD which is annoying. It's also 5 years old so maybe it's time for a new TV.

Technology has changed quite a bit during that time and I've got a short list of 3 different TVs.

Samsung PS63C7780, 63" Plasma (I think this is the PS63C7000 in the UK)

Samsung UE65C8700, 65" LED

Panasonic TX-P65VT20, 65" Plasma

Not really bothered about 3D as I think it's a fad but do want superb picture quality. Anyone care to suggest which one will be the best choice?

i think your best bet is panassonic, esp if you had a pio - btw no 5 yr warranty on it left?

also pana have a V20 which isn't 3-d like the VT; although I know it exists in 50", i don't remember if they did it in 60". may need to check on that

i haven't seen the V series since i am not bothered as my pio 5090 still in mint condition, but i have read that the V series is as good as it gets with new models. that said there have been issues with fading blacks, (although i never researched it in depth), it may be worth for you to investigate that further so you can make informed decision

just checked panassonic, and if you want 65" size then only choice is VT series, biggest V series is the 50"

image quality is identical, only difference between the VT and V is the 3d

Source a Kuro KRP 600? :D:D:D:D

Stay away from the LED (cough LCD) as you will be dissapointed.

Panny 65 should be nice, but haven't seen one. Consider the PF11 as they are the professional range of screens rather than those for mere consumers.

seconded on the Panasonic. Especially that they're offering a free 5 year warranty on selected models (TX-P65VT20 is one of those models) When you buy one via a selected dealer between now & the end of Jan.

but are they better PQ wise or are they, as i suspect, the same with more adjustment possibilities? which is a PITA imo more than anything unless you know/want to fiddle with all the settings. i'd rather just sit back and get an ISF calibration ;)

Panasonic wipes the floor with the Samsung.

SHould be better PQ wise but hell even I haven't seen the PF11.

But for a man of Spies calibre I'm sure he wants the best....

VT20 seems very good from the HDTVtest review. Get the 65 :D

Very pleased with my panasonic v20 50". My only criticism is that it could have been bigger! For the money I don't think I would be able to get a better set. Unfortunately it's not the most aesthetically pleasing tv out there... Not that I'm looking at the frame when I'm watching the picture. Not sure how much of a consideration that would be, especially if you're considering LED sets.

I think I'm going to wait for the V30. Not concerned about the extra specification, but it does look nicer.

Going back to your original post, I'm surprised you don't use some kind of AV receiver to manage your sources anyway, I mean I don't have the biggest of budgets and I can't stand watching tv through the inbuilt tv speakers, find the lack of clarity meaning I have to have it far louder than I'm comfortable with to make out what people are saying!

Another shout for Panasonic plasmas though, my trusty 46" G10 is still serving me well :)

Of course I have an AV receiver. I don't use it to switch video sources though. I connect SAT and DVD video direct to the TV.

...I used to do that but now use the amp. Have found it unbelievably convenient and easy.
Don't know why I didn't do it sooner.

It would only require the use of your remaining hdmi socket, you can auto switch scart as well as hdmi and it would tide you over until you get a new TV when you can revert back if you desire.

Out of interest Spie, have you ever considered a proper home-cinema set up? You really can't beat a dedicated room with a cinemascope setup. And I'm sure with the funds and expertise at your disposal you could get a truly incredible setup!

I guess it depends how much you enjoy films.

only Plasma manufacturer i would go for is Panasonic, and now they have some of pioneers engineers things will get better for them
