Hey,

I need to create a document like a Will/Dying wish? to tell people what i want done with my affairs etc when i am gone.

Do you think i could create a word document outlining my instructions? Would that be legally acceptable? Or do i need to go through some company/lawyer and do it properly :rolleyes:

Typically you'd hire a legal expert to be sure that it's complete, but if you've not much to cover a DIY certainly wouldn't hurt. That's espeically so when the alternative is no will at all.

Also, I'd recommend a .pdf so that it'd be readable in the future when/if MS changes the Word format again.

need two people whom arnt in the will to sign it iirc

whsmiths do kits for diy-ing it for £15 odd
 
I think anything is legally binding, so long as it's been witnessed.

As has been said, you can go to a solicitor (a mate of mine does wills for £100 or thereabouts) or get a DIY kit from Smiths, the Post Office, etc.
 
As long as it is witnessed, it is binding.

Best to spend the money and get a solicitor to go over it. Better safe than sorry!
 
Agreed it is better to be done so it is watertight. Are you in a Union (work)? I got my Will done for free and wrote up/checked by a proper solicitor. Worth looking in to.
 
You need to say certain things in the will to make it binding.

You need to appoint an executer to administer your estate for a start, typically its your lawyer. You will need to think hard how you divide up your estate, it is here where it gets tricky, you need to be specific so that your relatives don't fight over things over your vague instructions. And you'll need to get it signed, usually you, executor and a witness.
 
I got mine done for £150 about 4 months ago, by a local solicitor. Very painless process, totally watertight, and they hold a copy on file in case you lose yours :p
 
I dont have a house. Its basically some requests like giving money to someone and giving a message to someone.

Wherei used to work they keep the original on file in a safe and give the client a copy.

You need to be specific as to the amount, best to do £10k to x, £10k to y and all remainder in account in HSBC to Z.

You'll need to think about your other possessions such as car, collectables, or value items too.
 
You really should go to a solicitor to have it done properly and they can store it for you. However if you feel compelled to do it yourself then I would recommend you purchase a book (and CD package) called 'How to write your own will'.
 
What happens if you don't have a will? Do your next of kin/parents/siblings automatically get your stuff?
