Latest batch of Q6600's.... really poor overclockers!

Overclockers have the Q6600's guaranteed to run at 3.3ghz for 129 inc VAT at the moment - well worth an extra few quid for the peace of mind

Just out of interest, does this mean the other ones they sell are crap? Do they test them and sell on the ones that wont do 3.3ghz easy as 'normal' chips? :)

I think it means if you can't achieve the stated overclock they will replace or I assume give you a refund :)
There not "cherry picked" anything like that.

Hi there

The board we're using has been updated to the latest BIOS. In fact I used the same board and a Q6600 about 6 weeks ago in another build. That one did 3.4 out of the box with no voltage tweaks whatsoever so I know the equipment is fine.

I truely think the chips are the issue and being the Asus board sets the voltage to over 1.43 the moment you get above 3.1gig anyhow I see no point throwing more at the chips in order to try and eak a little more out of them. They only seem happy at 3gig and thats it.

Shame really, but then looking at those new 9550 chips and their price it looks like the Q6600's true successor has arrived... :)

I was quite gutted to read this, I was about to buy a Q6600 this week :( However, I'm willing to push the boat out and "do it properly"... I'll go for a Yorkfield 45nm quad instead.

Is the Q9550 the be all and end all? Or would one of the (mercifully cheaper) lower end Q9xxxs clock the same as the Q9550? What kind of clocks are people getting off the Q9 series Yorkfields? I was hovering over buying the Q9550 at OcUK's pre-order price of £223. All opinions invited :D

@Stonedofmoo - in that case, im sorry to hear you got some poor chips!

I must admit i did want to go the 45nm route, mainly for power efficiency. However, my budget wasnt all that great, so the q6600 was a bargain, particularly considering the performance on offer. The current set up should keep me going until the next gen tech becomes affordable, and hopefully loads of people will upgrade as soon as Nehalem is launched and i will have the opportunity to get a nice, cheap q9550 second hand!

Hi guys

Just to let you know I may have written these chips off a little early. With some burn in time and a bit of tweaking we now have 3.3gig at 1.475v. That's a lot more than I would normally use but it does seem as though there is some extra performance to be unlocked if you don't mind throwing a little more voltage at them than normal.

I think mine could be a good clocker, the only thing stopping me at the minute is my crappy acf7 cpu cooler. At load 3.0@ghz my temps top out at 50'c on the highest core. my case cooling is pretty good but the arctic cooler is a bit of a let down.

50 is very low, i get to 68 or so at load... keep overclocking and stop at 70degrees... in my case i just went to 1.4v and 3.6ghz from stock, no need to faff about

edit this is how to test your setup
1) open side of your case
2) put a huge 30cm desk fan on highest setting
3)look temps while drinking coffee

mine dropped 1 degrees so unless ** processor drops 5 minimum, i wouldnt blame the cooler just yet
