Latest Opteron Clock

I've had mine running at this for the last few weeks.

Prime stable. Great chips these 0540 FPAW's!

Yup, you want to set it to a blent test (lots of RAM tested) and then leave it for 24 hours and if its survived, your rock stable...

Agent

i did just over 15 hours sp2004, all test at once, is this good enough, will run SnM tomorrow.

Nice one... I'd sort of settled with my 24/7 set and stopped messing :), maybe I should start again....what volts does your chip take to get to 3ghz?

I bumped it up to 1.45v for 3Ghz, which I was amazed at, given 1.5v+ seems to be the requirement.

I don't run it at 3Ghz though because to do this I had to add another 120mm fan in to the side of the case to increase air flow. tbh I hacked a hole in to a spare side panel and added a fan pretty quick just to see if it would work, whilst 3Ghz was fine there was a nasty vibration on the fan so I took it out.

2.9Ghz will do me :D (Until I can be bothered to do the side panel properly)

nice clocking :) wish i had that stepping.
i just got a 146 - CACJE 0604CPAW . tryed searching for any 1 who as 1 with same code but no luck. as its so new.

im new to overclocking , i just wanted to know what settings i need to play with to get it clocked to 2.5 & 2.6

thx for any help

Funny mine took the same to get to 3Ghz (did try with 1.425, it did boot and I was able to use normal windows stuff but was not OCCT or Prime Stable :(

In the end I though I'd start running it a little lower 2760mhz and leave a little in reserve for when games started to feel slow... Think I might be waiting a while :) as everything is silky smoooooootth at the moment... hehehe.

Depeneds on your board, memory, cooling.
You need to go through the guide and check what you can clock each componant..... Board>Memory>CPU.

Try these guides:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=138583

and if you get bored... here is one monster of a guide... explains everything very nicely.

IF after reading that you still can't overclock then I would stick to your processor defaults... Auto eveything ;)

im thinking of geting a

Asus A8N32-SLi Deluxe or a
DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT

but aint sure whats the best to go for. 1 is better for clocking other as 2x16 sli which i proby never use lol

as for the memory ive got 70 quid for that i was thinking of get GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value duel kit, but dunno if that will be any good for clocking me opty 146. what do u think ? farooqm

btw thx for the links on clocking :)

oh yea for the cooling i was thinking of geting a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro

Go for the Asus board. This is a decent clocker

The Geil Value is good for £70. As for overclocking, you'll need to put the ram on a divider as it won't clock much about about 220Mhz.

I'd consider going for the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium as it is a rather nice board and cheaper and putting the extra towards 2GB of ram - the OCUK Value stuff is well priced.

Again, you'll need to clock this on a divider but this doesn't really hurt the performance of your PC

maybe i should pay abit more in go for the Crucial 1GB (2x512MB) DDR PC4000 Ballistix Dual Channel Kit ?

if it helps? i dont mind paying abit more

thx for the help ajgoodfellow :)

That will allow you to run the memory 1:1 with the CPU up to at least 250MHz - you won't have to use dividers then

Dividers don't really hurt performance though and I honestly think that you'll get a larger boost in performance by running 2GB of cheap memory on a divider than 1GB of expensive memory 1:1 with the CPU.

The 2GB kit of Crucial Ballistix memory has suffered a lot of premature failures recently. I don't know if the 1GB kit suffers from it but I'd still be wary about purchasing it. If you want some nice PC4000 memory I'd look at Corsair

I'd go for the XMS4000 memory but I've yet to find it for a good price. OCUK have the XMS4400 memory but it's only a few pounds cheaper than the 2GB kit of PC4000 memory, making it too expensive!

I had a look at OCZ, Mushkin and G Skill but they don't have a reasonably priced PC4000 1GB kit.

I'd personally look at the OcUK Value 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel Kit (MY-006-OK) for £5 more than the Crucial Ballistix and run it on a divider

In terms of the motherboard the Asus is usually very stable but DFIs are great boards for overclocking, I dont think that X16 ports are fully utilised yet and will you be running two graphics cards?
I suppose that the Geil value memory is the best for the money and you can run it on a divider anyway.
The Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro is a brilliant cooler and I would definitely recommend it.

Freezer 64 Pro is doing the job here, bought for 10 quid from OCUK when they were on special, I find it very quiet especially when left controlled by smart guardian on my DFI board.

As for the memory I'll echo what others have said and say go for a 2Gb cheap kit rather than 1GB expensive stuff. I went for a 1GB kit and now wish I had bought a value 2Gb kit as I only run my memory on a divider at just over 200Mhz (cant recall what it actually is and for some reason CPU-Z has stopped telling me since updating to v1.32  ). The gods over at DFI-street have done loads of work on proving when it comes to A64 that its raw CPU cycles thats important and dividers dont do any harm - I'll take their word!

thx Mikey1280 & sepulchre i might go for the extra mem then, still unsure of what mobo go for

the only other thing is ive got a Ultra X-Connect 500W but i was told that they aint that good when ruing on the DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT, ive seen info saying they r ok and ohers sayint there not , i do have a Ultra X-Connect 24pin cable so it should work ok shouldnt it? the rails seem to be ok to

It'll probably be OK but it's not a native 24-pin PSU which can cause problems with the DFI board. The DFI board also has an EPS 12V connector (8-pin) whereas your PSU has the standard 4 pin connector

Unless you're aiming for huge overclocks (ie phase) I'd stick with the ASUS board
