Lauryn Hill jailed for tax evasion

Disgusting realy, lock her in a cage because she wanted to keep the money she earned. Even though she has had $1 million stolen now they want to make an example out of her and when she gets out of prison she still has to be a prisoner in her own home, realy realy disgusting display of grotesque power of the state. Nothing better than common thieves. They would have taken her kids away and sold them to another family and then taken everything she owns, even after all that they will still ruin her name. Disgusting. IF she resisted any of this with force, they would not have hesitated to murder her. Next time you think about how great and caring the state is. think of this one.

We should revolt :D we need a new Thomas Baker to start the resistance. In 2031 it will be 650 years since the Peasants Revolt and how far have we come in this regard? it is far worse today than it was 650 years ago and that lead to a violent uprising.

Not sure what your point was, whats wrong with locking up people who use public services, live in a society where everyone is supposed to chip in for society, but you refuse to pay your share?

Considering the poorest demographic in america is... black people, and the people most in need of help financially are.... black people, and she is one of the few RICH black people in america she has a larger moral obligation to pay taxes to help fund social security and benefits which disporportionately help poor black people more than everyone else.

If everyone rich in america paid no tax at all, the demographic that would suffer the most is black people, yet she made it, and now doesn't want to pay to support other people herself...... who is she helping by refusing to pay tax, poor black people, or herself, a rich black woman?

Nothing worse than people who realise how crap it is to be poor and downtrodden, get rich and become hypocrits, refuse to help other poor people, become entirely selfish and use the race card as a reason she shouldn't have to pay tax now.
 
If I don't pay my taxes, I expect to face the consequences.

Maybe in the UK they come round with tazers but here they come with guns. Even the IRS itself has guns.

Having guns, and being forced to pay taxes at gunpoint is very very different kwerk. Remember this is a country that sees no issue in arming all its civilians, so why shouldnt the IRS have them?

I pay taxes, yet have never even seen a tazer, don't know anyone that does? And even if it had, comparing it to slavery would be a gross over exaggeration and you know it.

"I happily pick cotton all day long on the plantation and have never seen the master's whip". Try NOT paying them. If you dont work for free and give the proceeds to the government they will:

A. Lock you up in prison.

I laugh how you twist what i am saying around completely and then claim to not understand my point. Then go on a rant about how the person is helping poor people by paying taxes. lol

Unless you've been living under a rock or just don't listen to any kind of music or have not done for the last decade or two then I can't believe that somebody has not heard of of her or The Fugees. Most especially someone who seemingly is up with the times with modern stuff.
 
Hill has always had a chip on her shoulder and is ready to play the race card whenever possible.

There used to be a rumour (that will no doubt be stated as fact by someone else in this thread) that she once told MTV she'd rather starve than have white people buying her albums. It wasn't actually true but the fact it's so wildly accepted by people who hear it tells you what you need to know about her. If she didn't say it, you can easily imagine her doing so.

I heard something along those lines too about how her music is not for white people to listen to and doesn't want them too lol.

But that isn't really what happened in this case - or indeed any cases of people being unable to pay their taxes here or in the US. First off, she had 10 years or so to file her returns and pay the taxes due. If, at any point, she found herself to be unable to meet her liabilities she could have approached the IRS to discuss paying in instalments. She could even have attempted to reach a compromise arrangement. Instead, it would seem she has simply refused to file correct returns and pay the tax right up to the point when her legal team has realised she is likely to incur a custodial sentence when suddenly the funds become available and she settled the liability.

The fact is she was convicted of tax evasion. That doesn't mean that she simply did not pay her taxes. Or even that she refused to pay her taxes. Or that she took a stance on grounds of morality. It means that she deliberately and criminally attempted to hide her true tax liability in order to retain more of earnings than should have been the case.
