LCD, LED or Plasma?

42g10 owner here. At £800 with a 5 year warranty I couldn't help myself. It sits about 2/3m max from my bed and I love the picture quality/black levels...etc. DVDs and freeview even look good at this distance (well film 4 and the major channels do, the rest i find are lower quality)

what are you trying to get at sunama? .

I'm just highlighting that a TV (or indeed any consumer item) cannot be rated on performance alone. The price also has to be considered.

The problem right now, is at the low end (around the £5-600 mark, which is where most TVs sell at), LCD doesnt seem to be able to cut the mustard.

A year ago I would've loved a Pioneer screen, especially given the amount of love they get on here. As already aforementioned, you lot are the "clever" ones. To watch something, "the way the director would want." Yeah, sure, sounds good to me.

After seeing the "LED" Samsung screens the other day though it was like, woah! Now they've sorted the blacks out, well breathtaking. I picked up a 46" bad boy and await patiently for delivery. Well chuffed. :p

Agreed, they are beautiful. Prepare for a backlash from -Ad- though!

Have had my gorgeous 42" panasonic plasma for a year now and it's beautiful still :)

LCD/LED may look good in the shops but most consumer-level ones are rubbish really. Sure if you're buying brand-new top of the range tech then it might outperform a £700 plasma but that's not unexpected really ;)

Am awaiting OLED screens before I replace my plasma

I agree generally, but the problem is that many shops create a separate viewing / listening area, where the lighting is closer to the home environment. I have seen LED and 'LEDs' in this environment, and for HD TV they seemed to trump plasmas.

That said I'm getting a plasma as most of my viewing is still SD.

Id recommend looking at the Sony Z5500 series, Ive viewed that any the Panny V10 side by side and for me the Sony gave a much better picture.

I spent ages deciding between the sony's and the Samsung 7 series, eventually went for a 40" LEB750, it is fantastic. I think they all have SQ01 panels which is much better than entering the 'panel lottery' of the B650's, the blacks are great and to top it off i can hold back getting Sky HD as the SD looks so good! The Media play off USB stick works great, and im so pleased I bought it to replace my still working panasonic quintrix crt that was a fine damn tv in itself!

LCD's even with LED backlights still don't compete with a good plasma. Sure under shop lights with a HD feed they look great, get them home and watch something with dark scenes and a bit of movement and you will realise why plasma is still better.

I dont think the LED TVs are all that at the moment, unless you are looking at the highend models in Samsungs case B8000 / B8500. They look nice in shops as they all have there settins on vivid, which make every thing very bright and a little over satturated. I also have been reading that the current B8000 screens have motion problems thanks to the latest update from Samsung, this should be fixed shortly hopefully. The forth comming X5500 series from Sony are set to blow the likes of Pioneer out of the water. However, ill reserve judgement till have seen them in action. Is the 7 series edge or backlit?

Ill post some pictures of my Sony, when it arrives on Wednesday / Saturday if that helps?

Did you read the part I put about certain shops creating viewing areas designed to replicate living room lighting?

I think you meant to call them W.T.F-hifi :p

Don't take them seriously, it's WHF after all. Check out the avforums reviews and those from hdtv-test.co.uk (don't review that many sets anymore).

Where abouts have you seen this. I still haven't seen any high street stores with accurately calibrated sets (aka not in dynamic mode with colours + contrast cranked) in a darker than shop floor environment.

I know What Hi-Fi, isn’t to be taken seriously. I personally use avforums most of the time :D

However, i still going to stand my Sony choice. Ill try and get some screen shots next to the Pioneer as well :p

John Lewis in Solihull. They turned the lights down in the viewing side room when I asked them as it was early on Saturday morning, then I played with the settings on the TVs and had a jolly good compare.

What sort of material did you view? Was it SD? HD? What was the feed -SKYHD, BluRay?

Details please.

If you've only viewed an HD source, then I can well believe that the LCD was good. The problem is that most people view SD material, which makes the importance of HD quality less important and plasmas tend to dominate LCD TVs if the source is SD.
