Le Mans - Circuit de la Sarthe

The 24 Hours of Le Mans (French: 24 Heures du Mans) is the world's oldest active sports car race in endurance racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, France.[1] It is one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world and is often called the "Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency". The event represents one leg of the Triple Crown of Motorsport; other events being the Indianapolis 500, and the Monaco Grand Prix.
The race is organized by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) and runs on the Circuit de la Sarthe, which contains a mix of closed public roads and a specialist racing circuit, in which racing teams have to balance speed with the cars' ability to race for 24 hours without sustaining mechanical damage.
Since 2012, the 24 Hours of Le Mans has been a part of the FIA World Endurance Championship. In 2016, it will be the 3rd round of the season.
The race has over the years inspired imitating races all over the globe, popularizing the 24-hour format at places like Daytona, Nürburgring, Spa-Francorchamps, and Bathurst. The American Le Mans Series and Europe's Le Mans Series of multi-event sports car championships were spun off from 24 Hours of Le Mans regulations. Other races include the Le Mans Classic, a race for historic Le Mans race cars of years past held on the Circuit de la Sarthe, a motorcycle version of the race which is held on the shortened Bugatti version of the same circuit, a kart race (24 Heures Karting), a truck race (24 Heures Camions), and a parody race 24 Hours of LeMons.

Classification

LM P1
The fuel tank size and minimum weight for non-hybrid cars may get adjusted to reduce the difference in performance between hybrid and non-hybrid cars.

There are no limits on the number of cylinders for any type of engine.

Bodywork is required to cover all mechanical elements of the car, so that it cannot be visible when the car is viewed directly from the front, side, or top.

The LMP1 cars are generally the most powerful, with faster straight-line speeds.

Until 2016, LMP2 allows both open and closed-cockpit designs (closed cars must have a windscreen, a roof, and doors on each side), while only closed-cockpit design is allowed for LMP1 as it is much faster and for safety. As of 2011, all cars must have fins on the rear bodywork to prevent them from rolling over in the air during crashes. Although a passenger seat is not used, cars must be designed to carry two people. The empty area of the cockpit is usually used to hold electronic devices and cooling equipment. Only production-based engines were allowed in LMP2 with diesel engines permitted from 2013 onwards.

From 2017, in order to limit the costs, FIA will introduce a new set of regulations, which will be locked in through 2020, aiming a significant power increase, to the range of 150 horsepower (which is expected to led to a four-second decrease in lap time at Le Mans). Gibson Technology will be the exclusive engine suplier, producing a four-litre normally-aspirated V8.

Dallara, Onroak Automotive (Ligier), Oreca and the joint-venture Riley Tech/Multimatic where selected by FIA as the four exclusive chassis constructors,[6] which must be closed-cockpit designs.

LM GTE - Pro & LM GTE - Am

The ACO has defined limits and requirements for the LM GTE category to ensure that cars are legitimately production-based. The car must have "an aptitude for sport with 2 doors, 2 or 2+2 seats, opened or closed, which can be used perfectly legally on the open road and available for sale." The ACO modifies its regulations for “Small manufacturers” (less than 2000 cars produced a year). In order to be eligible a big manufacturer must produce at least one car a week or a small manufacturer one car a month. The cars will be eligible to race when 100 road cars for big manufacturers or 25 road cars for small manufacturers are produced. The car must have an official launch campaign and sales network. The engine must be used in a production car; while this is usually the engine from the road car, the ACO has made exceptions for cars like the BMW Z4 GTE which use engines from other models. Carbon fiber, titanium and magnesium are banned except for special parts like spoilers or wheels. Cars with carbon cockpits (that are not directly attached to the suspension) are allowed. The engine displacement is limited to 5.5L naturally aspirated or 4.0L turbo/supercharged. The SRT Viper is granted a special waiver to 8.0L. The minimum weight is 1245 kg. Cars must have working lights and windshield wipers at all times. To distinguish from faster Le Mans Prototypes at night, LM GTE cars must use yellow headlights. Four-wheel drive is banned while engine-based traction control is allowed. Gearboxes are limited to six forward gears. All cars must also have rear-view cameras in addition to side mirrors.

Cars are allowed one set of modifications every 2 years. Brand new cars are allowed one extra set of modifications in the first year of competition. Small aerodynamic modifications are allowed for Le Mans each year. If the road car is upgraded with a new part, that part can also be used on the LM GTE car through updating the homologation. Manufacturers can also apply for waivers to allow the homologation of cars or parts that would normally be banned by the rules.

Overall, the technical regulations are focused on keeping LM GTE cars relatively close to road cars in terms of parts and dimensions. Aerodynamic devices such as spoilers are heavily regulated. There are also minor requirements that are holdovers from the earlier era of Le Mans, such as requiring at least 150 cubic decimeters of luggage space.

At Le Mans, LM GTE is divided into two classes: GTE-Pro and GTE-Am. GTE-Am cars must be at least one year old or be built to the previous year's spec, and have limits on the quality of drivers allowed in the lineup.

The Endurance Committee of the ACO has the absolute right to modify the Balance of Performance between LM GTE cars through adjusting the weight, engine or aerodynamics. Air restrictors are used with default values for specific engine capacities

2016 Regulation Updates

At the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans, the ACO announced a range of changes for the LM GTE class. The aim of the changes is to increase the performance of the cars relative to the GT3-spec machinery that they compete against in certain series, whilst reducing cost and improving the safety of the cars. The regulations will be less restrictive, and so there will be a reduced reliance on waivers to allow certain cars to compete. One example of this is the increased freedom of aerodynamic development within specific regions of the car. The new cars will be able to compete in LM GTE Pro from 2016 alongside the 'old' specification of car, before becoming available for LM GTE Am in 2017. In 2018, the 'old' specification of car will be out of competition.

Will be watching from home, already have a couple of days book off before and after to prep and rest. The expansion of the pits to accommodate 4 more cars is a nice step and the racing so far this year has been great although the big 3 have yet to get a good grasp on the reliability so far and that has only been during 6 hour races!

It's a shame that the LMP1 field is light this year both for hybrids and privateers but still that has allowed great fields of LMP2's which are awesome racers and the ever brawling GTE crowd. Garage 56 this year, which is the 'future tech, proof of concept' experimental garage is doing something a bit different this year as instead of a new fancy technology is instead hosting a quadruple amputee driver.

Also, Ford's GT efforts? Shenanigans!

Somehow, miraculously got special permission to race a car that shouldn't even by categorised and then somehow got the OK to enter 4 as team cars. They have been formation driving all year and staying under radars, in a previous race they also only used 5 gears for some reason.

In testing they set dubious sectors times but luckily somehow only managed midfield times which looked completely innocent... For a large part of the test their timing info went down thanks to a series of transponder issues...

Shenanigans.

I bet if they could enter 13 cars like they did in '66 they would.
 
Just browsed through the Le Mans entry list on Autosport and didn't realize there are 23 LMP2 entries!

Thats going to be the race to watch I feel.
 
It's one thing I really enjoy with WEC, as you get really good racing across all the classes.

So it all technically starts tomorrow! I really can't want, I am really gutted to not be going this year.

Whilst technically brilliant and exciting, LMP1 is actually a bit of an anti climax this year. Realistically only 6 cars in it and with attrition rates you will possibly see a Rebellion on the podium. But rather than being a spectacular result for a team in a class that's geared totally against them, it will just be because VAG cut a 3rd of its entry out as a PR stunt to try and save some face in the emissions farse.

The Garage 56 entry this year is utterly fantastic and inspiring though. I hope they finish as its truly remarkable seeing a quad amputee race a car!

Isn't that a good thing though surely as its going to keep every one on their toes. It's a shame Toyota are not quiet up there in terms of pace of Audi and Porsche. Also speaking of attrition, Porsche have gone back to the 2015 battery for the LeMan race as I know they have been having problems with it this year. However, I'll be supporting Porsche as expected but rooting for Webber, Hartley, Bernhard and Mr Tandy in the 991 RSR. :D

Fords entry this year is going to be a interesting one, as it seems to have been hit and miss at Silverstone and Spa unless they have been sandbagging.

I think it's very much that they've been sandbagging, which is pretty poor sportsmanship given the way BoP works. They are doing everything they can to ensure a win at Le Mans, even if two races at Silverstone and Spa were poor because of it.

LMP1 should be interesting if reliability holds - all three factory teams appear competitive, including Toyota, and with two cars per team it'll be a fairer fight than previous years.
 
Eurosport last night was a total joke. At times we had about 8 minutes of coverage between ad breaks of 2-3 minutes each! That's beyond a joke and if it stays that way for the race itself, they'll end up covering about 18 hours of the full 24!

If you fork out for Eurosport player then you can access the stream without breaks but then you have to find a way of getting the stream onto a TV, it's only 720p and you have to find a way of listening to RLM commentary at the same time and syncing the too - major hassle.

The reduction in number of cars and the fact that the three hybrid teams are much closer in performance this year puts the onus back on reliability and havign a clean race, rather than just outright speed.

It’s normally why I tend to stick to the WEC App / Website as its uninterrupted coverage. However, the commentary on there last night was a little poor and not the normal team. I did to be fair watch it on Eurosport last night.

However, it seems Ford have been sandbagging which isn’t a good show from them especially as they also have been allowed to carry less ballast then the rest of the field. So there are going to be a few upset teams up and down the field.

Audi done a brilliant job to get the cars turned around out on to the track as I wasn’t sure they was going to be able to get out and set some times. Porsche seem to be on the money with the times as well but it still seems the circuit still looks green as we are still some 3 or 4 seconds off the times from last year.

I've used the WEC or Eurosport Player streams in the past but unfortunately they're not the same quality and you only get a proper 1080p picture from the broadcast Eurosport channel. I don't generally mind advertising providing it's reasonable - 2/3 minutes every 8/9 minutes isn't.
