learning to drive.. What car would suit me when i pass?

Haven't you had a **** load of problems with yours? :p

It's rare but when something does go wrong I like to cause a drama :p

In two years of ownership my MK3 has had the hand brake lockup, locking mechanism in one of the rear doors broken(my mothers fault) and more recently some starting issues which was down to me running it low on petrol :p I can honestly say it's been a fantastic first car, absolutely effortless.

Pug 106 1.5D, slow and very good MPG?

What ever you get make sure its a low insurance group cause you are gonna get bent over no matter what.

Nonsense. Insurance groups are a general indication and not a fixed defining factor on price. Yound drivers only get 'bent over' when they go 'herp derp iva saxo lolz.....meeeeerkat.comz!!'

A bit of common sense, hard work and thinking outside the box is all that's needed, a nasty slow tin can is not necessary

Is there a single one of these left thats not fallen to bits?

Probably not, but then again the build quality on a MK4 Ford Fiesta is hardly safe like.

They're cheap, relatively economical, spacious (in compassion to what else has been suggested) and strong mechanically. I don't see how you can go wrong :).

A lot more uncomfortable than a Fiesta, very crashy ride IME. Also a 1.0 isn't going to be economical anywhere outside of town.

My sister has one as her first car, its getting 48mpg as an average, and when doing 70-80mph its between 50 - 70 mpg on the trip computer.

its worth a look.

No, you wouldn't do :)

Feel free to drop the arrogant, condescending attitude and add a little positive input into the thread at any time mate :).

A thread where the main contenders seem to be a MK4 Ford Fiesta and MK2 Renault Cilo, and you want to dog on the 306 suggestion due to supposed build quality issues?

I just hate that ridiculous 'You cant go wrong' comment when applied to an entire range of cars for less than a grand - you absolutely can go very wrong indeed, and such statements are very misleading.

The 306's were shabby and falling to bits when they were all the rage as first cars on here about 5 years ago, they'll be even worse now and you very much can go wrong.

I think something like a Fiesta is probably a bit more hardy.

There are plenty of nice 306s around, something like a facelift 2.0hdi meridian would be great.... But a grand doesn't buy one

Please don't tell me you're taking the " You can't go wrong" comment this seriously? :p

He always does I'm afraid - he's a serious young (old) person :p

I think the 306 idea is a good shout I had one for about 18 months or so and it was really rather brilliant. However I guess this was about 7 years ago and they're getting on a bit now.

Fiesta is a good shout though - basic, fairly cheap and durable.

wonder if there are any sensible jap hatches that could be suggested too?

Had my fiesta 1.3 for 6 years, bought it for £1300 from the auctions and spent nothing maintaining it during that period, could not recommend them enough, brilliant little cars.

You should just about get one of these for £1000 ... Fabia 1.2. (they made the 1.2 from 2003 onwards)

Cheap to insure, 60mpg and very reliable. Perfect first car. 1.25 fiestas are good, but it will cost you more to run, and are more likely to have reliability issues, rust etc on a car of that age.

You're not going to get 60Mpg from a 1.2 Petrol and it's not going to be cheaper to run, probably more expensive tbh. If you want to avoid rust issues, don't buy a rusty Fiesta...

Well the missus gets near as damn it 60mpg from hers on the 30min drive to/from work.
I'm not knocking the fiesta - she had a 1.25 before the fabia. Good little car. Build quality of the fabia is in a different league though and is definitely very much more frugal. The Op won't go wrong with either IMO.

It's not really a different league, it's still cheap and plastic, just more 00's. As for the MPG, I just can't believe that an overworked (only 64BHP and 0-60 in niegh on 16 seconds) is giving 60MPG. Out of the 2,000 odd Fabias on Autotrader, only 14 are under 1k and those don't look very nice at all. You get a much greater choice of Fiesta for the money.
