learning to drive.. What car would suit me when i pass?

It's not really a different league, it's still cheap and plastic, just more 00's. As for the MPG, I just can't believe that an overworked (only 64BHP and 0-60 in niegh on 16 seconds) is giving 60MPG. Out of the 2,000 odd Fabias on Autotrader, only 14 are under 1k and those don't look very nice at all. You get a much greater choice of Fiesta for the money.

Mpg - with her behind the wheel very high 50s is normal, although the drive to work is quite favourable (mostly national speed limit single carriageway).
Don't expect to get that on a motorway however - it's working too hard by 80mph.

It is definitely much more efficient than the fiesta though - I have had a 1.25 courtesy car for the last week (new model admittedly) and directly comparing there is no doubt the fabia is far more frugal (and slower lol) It was the same when comparing to her older 1.25 too.

Agree about the fabias on autotrader :/ They're a lot of money for tat! Book price is closer to 1k ... Decent cars do occasionally turn up for that sort of money though - and if you see one it would be worth snapping up!

 to [TW]Fox as I picked up a tidy example for a friend a couple of months ago for £1100 with only 55k on the clock.

Anyway I'm sticking to my guns ... the fiesta is a good choice ...the fabia is also a good choice and is more fuel efficient and better built than the fiesta. Secret to buying a cheap car is always to not get your heart set on one particular model - have several in mind and buy whichever comes up first at the right price. Good luck to the OP in finding a bargain :)

As proved by looking on AT, you just can't get a decent one for less than a grand.

You could get a decent 8 yr old Punto for a grand, my wife had one for 5 years, headgasket went, fixed it myself £40 apart from normal brakes etc nothing really terible, good little cars nippy and light, great first time cars the same cost Fiesta is slightly older and more miles

Spares are cheap, decent styling, easy to repair / maintain and low insurance

There are certainly none on AT at the moment and I agree you probably can't get one for under £1k
However the OP does say "around £1000" .... and I said in the post above - I found a good one recently for a friend for £1100 :)

Anyways - we're going around in circles here. Point is that the fabia is a decent option but when you are spending around £1000 it comes far more down to the individual example you can get your hands on.

I bought some wierd things when I was a teenager ... 12yr old Datsun Stanza anyone? (Kept in a garage and 24k miles from new) It was such a bargain I couldn't turn it down .... even after it hit a range rover head on, I still doubled my money on it selling it for parts!
The next few cars were a bit more exciting, but buying well meant I got 18months use out of each of them and made a healthy profit on them all. It helped me climb the motoring ladder despite being on a student budget!

So my advice OP - don't get too attached - just look for bargains and change when insurance etc comes down.
