Hey guys,

Can anyone recommend me a decent book (or other resources?) that will help me learn to play chess? I'm a complete beginner :D

Cheers!

There are probably books out there, but the best way is to play. Just whack out a board and get some games on the go - it's how I learned. Then again, I'm not very good.

Sometimes newspapers have plays in the back too. Obviously once you advance a little bit.
Best way is by playing like the others have said.

I learned in primary school, so in secondary school i had a head start over some of the other players.

Learning to play it will take you about twenty minutes playing with someone who is showing you.

Learning to play it well - I don't think there's a book for that, it's all about playing and getting experience.

Like poker, I'd say - "Five minutes to learn, a lifetime to master."

Learn to see the next 3 possible moves of every peice and make your move based on that. I haven't played chess in years but used to play it every other day. I can't play it timed though, I need atleast max 2-3 minutes to make a move. lol.

I spent quite a lot of time playing on this site - http://www.redhotchess.com/

It's free to join and each player is ranked so you can play against other beginners. I think there is a limit to the amount of games you can have going at once unless you subscribe but unless you want to play 20 games at one then that shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I would recommend not playing 20 games at once as when you get all chessed out you will make any old move just to get it over with and this will lead to lots of lost games.

The best book I have on the subject is Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess, it takes an unorthodox approach (natch, the man was a nutter...a genius but a nutter nontheless) compared to learning by copying the moves ... you dont even need a chess board and pieces to work through it :D

Just looked on Amazon, you can get a copy for 4 quid

Thats a bad way to play actually. It's like a poor mans computer chess. You shold be looking for imbalances on the board, find a plan that suits, AND THEN look for moves. You should do likewise for your opponents plans so you know what they are up to.

He only has to buy a cheap chess set to learn how to play. It's not a complicated game. I think that is all he is asking.

I think you are wrong when you say you won't lean to play well by reading any chess books. My dad has a whole bookcase dedicated to chess books and has been studying it for most of his adult life. He has played against a few grandmasters as well. Only managed draws against them but didnt lose.

Books will definitely help, just like they do for poker.

Just google "Unbeatable chess program", your moves into the program are your opponents moves, then you copy the moves that the program makes.

Done.

Obviously it's not unbeatable, but just extremely hard to beat.

"When I am White I win because I am White. When I am Black I win because I am Bogolyubov."

its all you need to know.
