I have a job I'm happy in, good management, co workers and loads to learn in my current role and chances of promotions.

I have applied for another role that's a big pay increase that would be more than even my next promotion could be by quite a big way.
It's also a lot closer to home aswell. And I pick the hours I work with my own schedule as long as the works done.

The only negative in my job is office based and the distance I do each week on Monday to Thursday equals 900 miles. It's roughly 5 hours in the car to get to work and back home 4 days a week.
That does sound a lot to most, but with what I mentioned above it's not a big negative for me.

If I'm lucky to be offered the new job I'm not 100% sure that I'll take it. I'm sorting of holding back as I've never had a job I enjoyed before.

What do you think.i should do?

You will have a 150 minute car commute each way every day? That turns an 8 hour day into a 13 hour day. Sorry but that's plain madness unless you plan to move closer to your new workplace ASAP.

Probably cheaper and better if you just rented a cheap dive stay there mon-fri. I'd prefer to sleep in a blues brother bedsite than travel 5 hours a day. Not only for time but cost as well. Even if transportation was free..five hours? Not a chance.

It's not very clear but I think you're saying that's your current commute?

If so I've done a similar commute and when I was mid 20s no wife or kid and it was my only option I was like you it was fine because I enjoyed the job.

Since COVID and move to hybrid working meaning it's cut that in half and also with Flexi time meaning I can start at 6 and finish at 2 most days so the roads are dead cutting the time down even more there's no way I could go back to it. It's fine if it's a must do and you enjoy your job but it's a game changer when you no longer have to do it and still enjoy your job.

Edit: rereading it, mine was actually only just over half that. No way could I do double my current office commute even with no dependents. Basically means you've got little life out of work, unless it was for a short time to bank serious cash.

Do you need the cash?
Would promotion change your perspective on your current job?
The commute doesn't bother you, but does it bother your family/friends/social life?
What led you to apply for the new job?

It can’t be 5 hrs commute each day? Of course it could be, but only doing 900miles a week must mean it’s a slow commute.

Money isn’t everything…unless you’re struggling.

The more you earn, the more you spend. Lol

What % raise are we talking?

No issue mentioning to current company why you’ve looked, got, and see a bigger salary and ask if there is anything they can do for a bit extra. You can even stay, and say you’ll stay either way, but put it on the table that you’re worth more.

50% of 30k is a lot different to 50% of 70k. So it really depends on what you mean by big too.

It's 900 miles from Monday to Thursday.

It literally says in OP, he does 5 hrs commute over 4 days

Is that your current commute as it reads that way to me in the OP?

If that is the case what would the new commute be ?
Yes it is, i do 900 miles in total each week from Monday to Thursday. It takes me about 2 and half hours to get to work and about the same coming home, this is my commute every week.

New commute is a bit harder to work out but I won't be leaving my county of Somerset, it'll be a lot less.

Let me get this straight. New job is:

1) "A lot" closer than your frankly completely crazy 2.5hr each way commute (any closer is better, a lot sounds much much better)
2) Financially leapfrogs your prospects in your current place
3) You are purely results based rather than simply time in seat based (realistically, all jobs are somewhat results based...) does this mean no core hours at all or you still need to be in office even if your results are resulting?

My actual brother... Unless you see something truly special with your current place, or there are obvious red flags at the other place, it seems like a total no brainer.

Mate that commute is mental. Take the new job and enjoy the other part of your life you’re missing out on with the extra money and spare time.

I take the job closer to home with a pay rise. 5hrs commute is crazy. You could have a 2nd life with that amount of time.

That is essentially an extra full day every week, like someone has given you 8 days a week, or 2 days of daylight hours.

New job seems a no brainer, I couldn't do your current commute 4 days a week. That will be costing you a fair bit in fuel/wear on the car.
