Ledley King retires.

i rate kaboul over dawson

Really? The number of mistakes Kaboul made last year I could have destroyed many-a-television.

Dawson's partnership with Ledley really brought him on I think and I would definitely put him ahead of Kaboul, if fully match fit that is.

I can't remember Kaboul making many mistakes last season - he was rock solid for virtually all of the season. He's a fantastic player who has come on leaps and bounds over the past couple of years. I'd pick him over Dawson every day.

Dawson has had some exceptional games over the years but he's too slow and too rash in the tackle. He complimented King very well though.

One of my favourite pieces of commentary on the King/Dawson partnership came when we beat Arsenal two seasons back:

72 min: Arsenal are throwing the kitchen sink at Spurs, but to little avail. Imagine having somebody repeatedly throw a kitchen sink at you, but only occasionally getting it on target. Now imagine you have two big burly blokes named Ledley and Michael watching your back, who like nothing better in this life than heading kitchen sinks as far away from them as they possibly can. That's what this match is like.

yeh i really hope kaboul takes control of a cb partnership with vertongohen this season. the bloke's a mountain. i remember we played liverpool, kaboul won the majority of stuff against carroll in the air.

Bit over the top in here. Decent player, not as good as Terry/Ferdinand so England have hardly missed much

Don't forget he's been at Spurs all his career though, so when they have the likes of Dawson he looks like a god.

Jakeke and Gilly. 2 comments that prove just how little you know about Ledley King.
BETTER than Terry, Better than Rio. Injury free? Would have been ahead of both of them. By a long way. as it was he was better than them, just couldnt do it week in week out. For god sake the man didnt even train! Go for a swim twice a week, then turn up and play in the PL. That tells you all you need to know about his quality.

Not really.

Better player
Better ambassador
Better person

PS Terry called him a black monkey in 2007....but then Terry isnt a racist....*whistles*

lol at King better than Ferdinand :o

It's very easy to say "well he was the best IF blah, blah, blah"

Its lovely having hindsight:p.

King could have been a very good player, when he was fit he was immense but sadly him being a crock...we never really saw just how good he could have become.

LOL@all the spud fans getting their knick knacks into a twist because a few dare to criticise the god called King:p

He didn't play regularly enough to be judged against the likes of Terry and Ferdinand.

He could have been better, but he wasn't. He was very good though, it's a shame about his condition.

I think Spurs fans have massively, massively overrated him.

I keep hearing that, when he's fit he's immense.

Rubbish, not overall but he was also completely rubbish when he was fit, sometimes.

Let me try and remember all the players who were deemed better than they were because fans always thought "what if he played in that game", every time another CB makes a mistake while Ledley was injured it automatically added to Ledley's greatness, despite not even playing.

I can think of LOADS of games he was complete **** in, most of them against Arsenal, RVP and Fabregas making a complete fool of him comes to mind, and he had plenty of terrible games in the past two years, and plenty of great games, that is what most players can do. The fact that he had so many bad games generally indicates he isn't THAT good, very good, probably, one of the best, no. People are just randomly forgetting all his woeful performances.... much like Hargreaves or, Diaby... okay not Diaby :p

As for his not training and turning up for games, firstly most players could do that, you train and learn football for 10-15 years(we're talking 5-20 age wise here), most of the rest is keeping you at your absolute peak, 100% peak fitness/form is exponentially harder to hit than 95%. If most top players didn't train but played once or twice a week they'd still be very good.

Is/was Ledley great, who knows, he didn't play often enough or against the best opposition very often. Much like any other player, you can look great against Wigan but be torn a new one against Barca, how much truly top teams did Ledley ever play against? I find it hard to believe someone can be "great" while having rarely ever been tested to actually see if he was or not. Better than your average prem CB, by a mile, Zack Knight has been a premier league defender though, its not saying an awful lot :p

A lot of rival fans missing the point, he is loved not just because he was a great footballer but because he dedicated himself to Tottenham off the pitch as well.

We are not saying that we wasn't a top bloke and a great footballer, just that he wasn't as good on the pitch as you said.

Some of your points have been a little silly to say the least. There is no one in the world that can go for a swim once a week and then play very well the PL. You simply wouldn't have the fitness. Ronaldo and Messi couldn't do it let alone someone with injury issues.

That tackle on Robben as well. He covered the ground well and it was a very well timed tackle but the ball should have been in the net when he was still 5-10 yards away. Robben dithered like a beast once he had broken through.

He was one of the top centre backs of the last 10 years but to say he was the best is rather speculative.

There's obviously a lot of love because he was a loyal servent to the club and played on despite having terrible knee problems.

However, you can't simply dismiss the opinion of those who actually saw him play on a regular basis. In his prime, he had every attribute you could ask for in a defender and was that rare breed of English centre-back who could play in midfield when needed. When your arch nemesis calls you the best defender in the league, you must be doing something right.

Better than Terry and Ferdinand? Impossible to say. Definitely one of the Premier League-era greats though.

Lucas Radebe couldn't train towards the end of his career either, and he was also better than Ferdinand and King and Terry.

Radebe is a great bloke too.

I didn't think Spurs fans could get any more crazy but I've been proven wrong there... Better than Terry and Ferdinand, oh dear.

Best defender I seen is Woodgate before Newcastle sold him for 17million to Real Madrid.

Could just read the game to well
