Hey all,

My PC is a bit old now (Coming up 4 years) with the following specs:

AMD X2 939 2.4Ghz
2GB DDR 1
ATI X1950XTX 512MB

Now I can run Left 4 Dead 1 maxed out with no probles, and the system specs are the same for L4D2 however even with medium settings I am getting average frame rates of 15 - 25, with extreme lag in areas like "The Park".

Anyone know what could be causing this? Thinking of getting an ATI X4850, would this stop the problem?

Thanks,
Jcb33.

l4d2 is a fair bit more demanding, graphically. It's not surprising that it's dragging the framerate down to unplayable levels on your system. You could try reducing detail levels...

As for getting a 4850 - if your power supply is powerful and reliable enough to run it, then it would certainly help. Your CPU isn't the fastest though, so expect it to limit you in a lot of game scenes. If you could try overclocking your CPU towards 3Ghz you would see a more all-round improvement.

my PC is feeling the park bit a bit, no idea if its driver issues or anything or its cos I got the demo

Left 4 dead has always been cpu intensive, maybe the original had your cpu at 100% and L4D2 requires a little bit more, 2gb of ram is nothing really either, L4D2 alone uses up to 1.1GB on my system and uses upto 55% of my quad core [email protected]

On your system if you include windows and anything else you are running it is unlikely there will be enough to run l4d2 smoothly

2gb's of ram is fine for xp. Your gpu is fine for the source engine, but you really need to upgrade to a better cpu. How about going for a cheaper amd tri-core system for christmas?
Would make the biggest difference.

Try overclocking your CPU a little more. Might be able to avoid an upgrade.

I've found out that if you alt tab back to desktop then re enter the game it becomes super smooth.

Works for me anyway, it really stutters otherwise.

Left 4 Dead 2's zombies have removable limbs and such, meaning each zombie may look similar in makeup to L4D1 but has a lot more complex parts involved. It gives me trouble too and I am on a mid to high range machine.

I am updating my drivers now, however I will fully admit that I am not sure how to overclock a socket 939 setup, as I have not overclocked since Socket A. I also only have a stock cooler and already get around 50c average temps at stock.

Also I am sensing a no to upgrading to the 4850, as it looks like its not going to make that much difference?

Thanks again,
Jcb33.

CSS and TF2 which also use the Source engine need a decent CPU. Best to get a good cooler and read up on how to OC with your motherboard :)

L4D2 runs better on my ancient system than L4D1. On teh first game I run it at 800*600 with everything on low. On L4D2 I run it on medium, 1024*768 wi the same FPS.

System:

1.8 C2D, 4gb ram, 8600GT.

maybe its the demo poorly done maybe? not sure should really make my PC struggle

Can run CSS, TF2, HL2, Portal, L4D etc maxed out no problems, just L4D2, that having been said I just tried disabling multi core rendering and everything seems to have speeded up :D

ok , i am getting the same thing

and this is with the following
[email protected]
2000MHz memory
Crossfire 1GHz 4890

this rig plays any game maxed out

tests i have done mean that the game runs maxed @ 130fps average whilst in single player offline

in online mode, I get 40fps
[tried every setting individually including multicore rendering]
disabling crossfire/altering settings makes the game run smooth @ 100fps+...
until the next level loads and the framerates drop back

i thought this was initially a crossfire issue but seems to be just when online if pings increase over 100

if im going to be honest, its ruining the game for me

Same and my pc is far from a slouch!!

Every time i eneter a safe room i have to alt tab.

My specs are
Core i7 920 @ 4.2ghz
12gb ram
2 x 4890's in cf
128gb Supertalent SSD

So far from a slow machine lol, this game is a bit of a joke, was hoping cats 9.11 would have resolved some issues, but have heard its the source engine not liking multi ATI gpus :( i need them to run at 2560x1600

Really not happy with the game so far, havent played it since really.

phew - glad its not just me then
i thought the 9.11 would help - it doesnt
disabling crossfire is the only fix i have found so far... not exactly ideal

running 1900x1200 here

cant understand why its not an issue in my other source games [hl2+eps, portal, tf2, css, l4d1, DOD]

cant see anyone else complaining about it online though

I'm running:

3.8Ghz C2D
8800 512 GTS
4gb ram

not super spead but runs everything else... online play is pretty horrible at times.

do i need a new rig?
