I have standard "UK" plates on my car and by that I mean they have the European logo and "GB" on the left hand side.

However I've seen an increase in people sticking "foreign" plates on their car. I.E indicating they are from France, Germany etc just for the sake of it.

Is that even legal?

No but more importantly they look absolute crap.

French/German/Spanish whatever plates = new lexus lights.

i disagree - i think they look good, far better than the "in your face bland typefont" used on british cars. Dont see why they cant be legal, i think as long as the plates readable then it should be legal. None of this spacing and size nonsense

But at that point how would we enforce it and who would say what is readable its much easier with a set of strict standards with no room for interpritation

I have had french style plates on my old renault. Reason being, i think they look cool and better quality being pressed metal. Had a lot of hassle from police. Finally one lot gave me a producer and made me take it to an mot station with uk plates to get it stamped.

I can understand they arnt allowed but i can't see the harm. All they were concerned about was the fact it had an F, they mentioned nothing about the font both times. Seeing as the GB sign is optional anyways i don't see the issue unless someone can explain?

Its so we can all drive freely within the EU.

Your breaking the law iirc if you display for example "F" for France on a GB registered car in the country segment of the number plate.

Cos if it was in an accident/crime an onlooker might think it was a French car and report it as such.

The German ones look cool I suppose but the idea of doing it is kinda dumb.

Because the french police have no problems, why should ours?
As long as theres a minimum letter size then i think people should be able to do what they want font/material wise

But how far do we let the clowns go with clever fonts to defeat ANPR and overly reflective materials to beat speed cameras?

One of the times i was spoken to by an officer he told me he would take me to court over my number plates? I always thought it was just a £30 fine thats why i took the risk. I was fairly confident he was lying as he seemed to be on a massive power trip.

I'm not a great fan of them, but worse than EU-style plates are EU style plates from countries not in the EU.

Theres some bloke in my area who goes round with "GH" on his plates. The number seems to be a standard UK one and above the "GH" is the standard EU star sign.

In the back window is a dirty great banner saying "Ghana" on it and the Ghanian flag next to it  Since when is Ghana in the EU?!

The only ones I see are Polish and the cars are all bangers.
I'm glad its not just me who has noticed the sudden influx of these morons. Their driving leaves a hell of a lot to be desired
