Lens for animals (pets) portrait - aps-c canon

No flash experience here either :D I'm waiting for that new super super Yongnuo flash to come out and I might get that
 
Could always consider the Tamron 17-50 f2.8's? I used to have the original on crop years ago but apparently there's a new one out with VC.

Second hand non-VC lenses used to go for about £200 so worth a shot, also add a flashgun for bounced/diffused light indoors.
 
I've got the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VC and the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS. The Canon isn't streets ahead in terms of IQ, in fact my copy of the Tamron seems to have the edge in sharpness, especially for close subjects. I can't recall the AF on the Tamron ever holding me back compared to the Canon, although as mentioned the Canon is definitely quieter.

IS on the Canon is obviously a big plus. The VC version of the Tamron is said to be somewhat softer but still no means a poor lens.

It's right on the price I want to pay (haven't read about it yet) but my main concern is I may not have part of the focal length I need

For example that lens would leave me with

100mm macro L f2.8 for long.. This should be fine for that range?
50mm f1.8.. Would hopefully do for now
35mm f1.4.. The lens in question

What I don't know yet is if that is viable.
Particular concerns I have are

Missing focal length
Swapping of lenses

I'm definitely not saying no.. Primes and their usable wide apertures, nice bokeh and low light friendliness are very appealing

Say I go the prime route..
I suspect a second body would be ideal?
 
I had a second body for a while after I bought my 70d but I found I couldn't be bothered to lug it all around and I didn't like using my 650d anymore lol

I've found that I'd rather do things with one lens and if I find it's really unsuitable then change.

If you're considering the 35mm 1.4 Art but you're not too sure then it's also worth checking the 18-35mm 1.8 Art too. It would give you a bit more range and it's faster than most zooms. Definitely worth a look I guess!

Personally I think you should just have a go with what you've got and see what happens :)
 
Been trying out my lenses today just to practice and get a feel for distance/size

My wide angle made some nice shots actually where the nearest parts of the subject are distorted.
I also tried my 100mm, long, only useful for outdoors but takes very nice head shots

Now the difficulty is the bit in between.
As said the 24-70mm would cover it perfectly.
The 17-55mm would also probably do.

The prime temptation is high tho.
As much for the shallow dof that won't be quite as nice as on a zoom

I think realistically it's
17-55mm
Or
Sigma 35mm f1.4 art

I don't think there would be any point in new 50mm as the 1.8 will do

That little sigma zoom is also interesting. Especially 1.8
There is mention of af inconsistency?

IIRC there's a good review on the 18-35 on yt, but countless people have bought the 35 art as it is crazily sharp, so there is a lot of reviews for it.

You'll be able to sell the prime more quickly i'd imagine if you have a change of heart
 
No doubt the 35mm F1.4 A is sharper and wider but it depends what you want... versatility or sharpness :)

Generally it seems better than the canon alternative or near as to not worry about it

This is tough as they are different as opposed to 'better'

I really like those shots
They look sharp and accurate but real. The bokeh looks amazing!

Considering a 35mm prime but not a 18-35mm lens because it's not a big enough range seems a bit lol :P

Prior to having my 18-35mm lens, I had the canon 40mm stm lens and whilst I liked it, as Janesy mentioned, the focal length just wasn't that useful. At least with the 18-35mm you get a pretty sharp 35mm lens as well as 18mm and everything in between. I used the 18-35mm more in the first few months than I ever used the 40mm :\

The new Canon EF-S 24mm pancake could be worth checking as it's a better focal length for crop sensors but only F2.8
 
Great pictures. Especially like the hearing gulls! Very cute!

Very good lens obviously especially on a zoom!

So if the both look good enough on image quality (they do from this thread) it's down to

The safe 17-55mm.
Will always be able to get a portrait shot
General purpose very good lens
Missing extreme bokeh
Missing some low light (compensated by IS)

The specific 35mm
At its range I will probably have nothing better
Amazing bokeh (this is hard to ignore tbh)
If I need a wider/narrower option it's lens change time
I'm not sure how I will get on with the specific focal length

I just don't see many people with this lens.
I thought that the range is so narrow I could just move my position.
It's not like the 17-55mm which basically spans 3 lenses and has is

I guess the benefit isn't so much the light benefit but the shallow dof
