So following on from the UWA discussion on another thread, just occurred to me how much I'm enjoying using my 10-22 these days. After a few exchanges/sales the set of lenses I seem to have settled on are:

  • Canon 10-22 for UWA, scenery type stuff
  • Canon 17-55 f/2.8 for general / walkabout use, works OK at low light for party/show shots too
  • Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens - for animals/zoos because I can't afford/justify a better telephoto :) - incidentally this lens is currently ridiculously cheap, I paid nearly £300 for it 2 years ago - it's now under £140 + a further £25 off from Canon! (offer ends 21 Jan). It's not L glass but a fantastic budget performer IMO.
  • Cheap nifty fifty 50mm prime for low light / portrait / macro hacking purposes :) Rarely get's used though.

What lenses/purpose combos are you guys wielding ? :)

Interestingly (and off topic) I've just checked my lightroom stats and out of my 'main pick' photos I've used all 3 key lenses pretty much consistently 135 picks with the 10-22, 165 with the 17-55 and 137 with the 55-250!

I pick and choose, buying (used) and selling depending on the trip I'm doing although the last two years it hasn't really changed. I'm trying to save money!

At the moment I have:

  • Tokina 11-16
  • Nikon 17-55 f/2.8
  • Nikon 35 f/1.8G
  • Nikon 70-300 VR
  • Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 OS + TC's
  • Sigma 105 f/2.8 Macro

I also have the use of a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8 OS and a 50 f/1.8, although I have never used the latter

The 17-55 is the walkabout lens but when I'm trying to travel light (such as a trekking holiday last week I leave it behind) I use the 35 f/1.8 instead. The 11-16 is with me most days and I alternate between the 120-300 and 70-300 depending on whether wildlife is the main reason for the trip (weights 3kg).

I actually spent about 70% of my time with the 11-16 on last week, it gave a very different perspective to most of my other trips.

I'm tempted to get a 18-200 style lens for real lightweight travel and possibly replace my 35 with a Sigma 35mm FF lens. Alternatively I'm tempted to go crazy and get a Sony FF EVF and a couple of their smaller lenses for landscape dominated trips, or when the Olympus 300 f/4 comes out an OMD-1 and 7-14, 12-40, 40-150 f/2.8 and 300 f/4 for an ultralight package, although at the detriment of the wide landscape end...

I can fit everything I own in my rucksack if needed but it's rare that I need to.

My Yongnuo 600 EX RT and wireless controller thingy will usually stay at home unless I'll need it.

Full bag will usually have:

Canon 10-22
Sigma 18-35 F1.8
Canon 24mm F2.8 STM - it's small enough so why not? :P
Canon 100mm F2.8L
Canon 200-400mm F4L

I'll usually decide whether I want my monopod or tripod in advance and whether I need to bring both the ballhead and gimbal or not.

I'll have the few filters I own and a spare battery etc + memory cards. Some waterproof clothing and my lenscoat of course :D

It's not a light bag... That's for sure! I figure it burns a few more calories though :)

I love my primes and like to stick to the following:

Nikon 16mm f2.8 AF-D fisheye
Tamron SP 17mm f3.5
Nikon 24mm f2.8 AI
Nikon 35mm f1.4 AI-s
Nikon 50mm f1.8 AI-s (may take the 55mm f2.8 micro instead)
Mamiya 80mm f1.9 (m645 to Nikon F)
Nikon 135mm f2.8 AI
Tamron SP 180mm f2.5
Nikon 300mm f2.8 AI-s

If I need to keep weight under control, I either take a more restricted range of primes or switch to the following zooms:

Tamron SP 35-80mm f2.8-4
Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D

and whichever wide prime I fancy.

Camera bag is usually:

5D2 with Canon 35mm f1.4
7D with Sigma 85mm f1.4

Optional Extras:
60D with Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6
Sigma 70-200 f2.8
Canon 24-70 f2.8L

Prefer carrying the weight of an extra body than switching lens, much quicker.

I've got the following:

  • Canon 7D
  • Sigma 17-55 f/2.8
  • Canon 100mm Macro
  • Canon 70-200 f/4 L
  • 0.6 / 0.9 HD Lee Filter with 77mm Wide Angle adapter

I only need 2 lenses at the moment for my Canon 6D

- Canon 17-40L F4 : Wide end for interior photos. General indoor portraits with bounced flash.
- Canon 135L F2 : Indoor and outdoor portraits

When my son starts playing football etc.. in a few years i'll add a Canon 100-400L IS MKII.

A simple light weight Lowepro Nova 17l AW which houses the above camera & lenses, Canon 580 flash and also has space for a full size iPad and some small pockets for batteries etc

Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR II Kit Lens
Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR II
Nikon 35mm f/1.8g (DX)

Oh god...

Canon 5D Mkii - gripped
Canon 24-70L
Canon 135L
Sigma 85mm 1.4
Canon 17-40L
Canon 430EX II

Underwater wise

Olympus E-PL5 with kit lens
Olympus PT10 housing (think thats the model)
Ultralight tray and handles + arm

Need a strobe...

We had a thread once where we all added it up. That was depressing! :D

Travelling light:
6D
Sigma 35mm 1.4A
Canon 85mm f1.8

General shooting:
6D gripped
Sigma 35mm 1.4A
Canon 100mm 2.8L macro
Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC

Afternoon / day out:
6D gripped
Samyang 14mm 2.8
Sigma 35mm 1.4A
Canon 100mm 2.8L macro
Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC
Canon 400mm f5.6L
Kenko 1.4x DGX Pro 300

When funds allow i want to add a 24-70 2.8 and a crop body (70D).

My 'limited budget' range for my 70D.

Sigma 10-20mm f4.5-5.6
Canon 18-135mm STM
Canon 55-250mm STM
Canon 50mm f1.8 ..plastic fantastic
Canon 70-200 f4 L non IS

I just love the 70-200mm L lens.. its just SO sharp and such a joy to use, that I hate taking it off :p .... The STM lenes on the 70D are simply awesome for video.

70% of what I do is landscape/nature (serious stuff) and the rest is family.

In my bag (geared for Landscapes):

Canon 5D Mark II
17-40 f/4L
24 TS-E L Mark II
45 TS-E
24-105 f/4L IS
70-200 f/4L
LUMIX LX5

Covers pretty much everything I need. Maybe I would upgrade to the new 16-35 and 24-70 in the future.

24 TS-E is the best lens for landscapes that I've used so far

14-42ez
45 f/1.8
40-150

On my wishlist is a 9-18, 75-300 (to replace the 40-150 and a 60mm macro.

I want that bag Raymond!

My paltry collection:

7D (Mk1)
Canon 18-135mm STM f/3.5-5.6 IS
Canon 50mm f/1.8 II
Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VC USD
