Leopard - who will be upgrading?

I plan on purchasing a Mac Mini when Leopard is released to replace my ailing PC. I can't wait! I used to have 12" Powerbook when Tiger came out but had to sell it due to writing off my car after only having it for a month :(

I will probably get it in the new year (bundled with the new Macs) or get it for my MBP if the reviews are good enough.

That won't be until 2 weeks after launch though.

The family pack states they all need to be at the same address IIRC... something I have noticed thats annoying me... the EPP discount gives me £15 of the single users software, but, nothing at all off the Family pack. :( can anyone confirm whether the Student discount is applied to the family pack software? my Bro-in-Law is just starting a college course and I may have to get him to buy it for me.
AFAIK - there is no good reason to buy the Family Pack. The standard version has no protection on it and can be installed perfectly on as many Macs as you want.

The only reason is to buy the Family Pack is to be "honest" and acknowledge that you will be installing it on multiple systems by giving Apple a little more money. Pass on that :D

That's an interesting way of paraphrasing "the only reason to buy the Family Pack is to avoid breaking the law"....

TBH, OSX is a great piece of kit and if i do decide to switch to leopard ill be buying it fully licensed up and legal to install on all my kit...

Why bother buying a single user version to install on multiple machines illegally, you could simply download a pirated version its cheaper and odds on no-one will ever find out...

I think the fact that the OS has zero licensing mechanism shows how important they consider that to be.

I'm not saying that people are wrong to buy the family pack instead of the standard one, just that it's an utter waste of money for a consumer.

Or perhaps they've realised that people who will install illegally will do so regardless of any 'mechanisms'. They must have done the maths and realised that developing a hard to crack licensing system was pointless.

The same company that encrypted something as trivial as the song listing on the iPod to stop people using their program of choice to interface with it?

(That just got cracked)

I'd say it's more a case of; you can't run it without the hardware.

So, whether you get it illegally or not you've still funded Apple along the line.

I always buy the OS, after all.. if it goes **** up then it's easier to sort it out.

You implied that there is no protection in OS X because they concede that it will just be cracked anyway.

I say that that they do and have chosen to put protection on things, and it gets cracked.

If you wish to continue kidding yourself that Apple wishes you to have free licenses then be my guest.

If you need your new iMac now, then buy it now. Macs are always being updated, and there will always be something better, so there is no point waiting. Also, I really doubt new iMac specs will be released with Leopard as they were updated a couple of months ago.

You will definitely suffice with Tiger. It is a brilliant OS and always will be.

Although, the release of Leopard is due around the end of this month, so it may be worth holding of for a few weeks.

If I was in your shoes, I would wait a few weeks until Leopard is released, then buy. It's not going to be like a new Windows OS, it will be pretty much bug free and working properly when released.
