at the moment i have a amd 3900x in some games my pc draws a lot of power and gets quite hot do you think i would be better off changing my processor to a amd 3600, would this make a difference?

thanks for the replys
haven't got any numbers eccept for the power meter, most of the heat does feel like it's coming from the graphics card (i have had the side of my case off and felt wear the heat is coming from with my hand):o.
I just thought changing my cpu might lower my power consumption.

Only if your 3900X is running at 100%. At which point you'll use less power with a 3600, and get a slower computer in exchange.

It's not worth the effort to swap as it's not going to make a big difference.

Why not just disable 6 cores rather than messing about swapping CPUs? Not that it will make such difference to power draw atleast in gaming.

Most heat these days for gaming is indeed GPU, more so if you have a high end one. CPUs in most games are pretty good and only use as much power as they need. I expect any move down from your efficient 3900x would save something like 20-30 watts, while a high end GPU these days putting out north of 300w is not uncommon.

And the rest! I managed about 620W on the Outervision calculator with 3080 at 320W and cpu @ 5.2 OC.

Bahhh if we include the rest then it is a heater :p System has a trio of GPUs in it, under full load hitting 1.6 Killowatts was not uncommon when I used to do simulation work and sitting north of 1.2 Killowatts for pretty typical.
