I assume in both cases the papers are being paid so whats the difference?

Hehhe you have to look at who started it and the commens he has made since.
He likes a bit of rabble rousing to inflate his super-ego. He's superior you see, his morality exceeds all, his opinions are better researched, more intelligent and civilised.

I haven't really followed this feud between you and Visage, but if he's such an awfully annoying terrible person, why don't you ignore him, and be the better man, rather than sit there posting over and over again telling us how horrible he is and insulting him?

OK, i may have taken it from the 'tone' of your posts that you were against the papers being printed in alternative languages. So do you agree with the decision to make the paper availible in polish?

Everyone views immigrants differently, to carry on the english/francespain example the governments might think its great when English people move over bringing a nice chunk of money with them, but the locals hate it because house prices go up and jobs goto a non local. Some people will hate the idea of more polish moving here because they may come with little money/take up all the cheap housing and then take up the jobs, whilst others think its good because its a source of cheaper labour etc...

Always thought the ignore option was a little strange myself. It seems the equivilant of sticking your fingers in your ears and singing to yourself so as you dont hear the insults being shouted at you. Surely if someones insulting you etc you'd want to know/do something about it... +its only the internet!

Because I prefer to challenge his posts than ignore them.
For someone who has me on ignore he certainly replies to a lot of my posts though. Perhaps he lacks the will to actually ignore me after all.

When I did it originally it was more of a self-control thing. Arguments with VIRII dont tend to go anywhere - he either browbeats you with pointless trivialities, or changes the goalposts. I dont think its possible to have any kind of reasoned debate unless all parties go into it being prepared to have their views changed, as opposed to entering debates with the sole purpose of convincing others that you're right and they are wrong. I realised I was spending too much time goping round in circles, so the ignore function was a useful aide memoire to simply not respond.

I can still ahve constructive, useful debates with folk like dirtydog and cbs, who's opinions are vastly different to mine. The difference is I dont have to have those debates in an atmosphere of uncontrolled agression. Its nice.

What tone?
I did say that whilst these people can speak english that they may not be able to read it well. Furthermore the money generated isn't coming from public funds so I have no issues with it.

Perhaps it may help, if Polish people are made aware of the news and issues that affect local residents?

I dont know this for certain, obviously, but I think its certainly worthy of consideration.

I guess it depends how long these Polish migrants are staying in England. I would have thought most would be staying for the long haul in which case it might be better to encourage them to build on their existing English skills.

My view probably isn't the right one as i'm biased in that I believe if I moved to another country to work for more than a couple of years I would do everything I could to learn the language.

If I could read the paper and talk to everyone in English I would probably be lazy and not bother learning the foreign language seeing as most people I speak to may have a basic grasp of English and I could read the local papers in English. But I suppose thats different because most Polish migrants already have a basic understanding of English and would probably still be learning even with the benefit of a Polish printed newspaper.

Yeah I can definetly see that side of it! I certainly think if you're going to live here you should learn the language. But you still should agree that they can speak their own language when they like. I.e. when i'm living in france i'll speak french when i can, but if i'm relaxing or chatting to an english mate chances are I'm going to want to speak/read English...

That would be true… if reading the newspaper were the sum total of their communication in their entire life. Realistically you have to have at least a basic grasp of English if you're to survive in Britain; sure, there might be local shops and whatnot that are Polish-owned and speak Polish to you, but anywhere you go that doesn't have a Polish enclave will result in you floundering about, unable to communicate.

Do Polish workers really not have any grasp of English at all?
