Let's list all the Good J-RPGs from this Gen

Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are my two favourites, followed by MagnaCarta2.

I've played Tales of Vesperia/Last Remnant/Eternal Sonata/Star Ocean/Infinite Undiscovery but not anywhere near enough to give a valid opinion on them.

I just could not get into Blue Dragon, i found the characters annoying, the levelling system unimaginative, the levels dull and drab and the music, oh dear god that boss theme is just agonisingly bad. I put a good 5-6 hours into it too (actually, probably much more than that!) so i couldn't see it winning me over.

I did like the idea of how you could cause mobs to fight eachother to weaken them etc though, that was imaginative.

"This is the beginning......" :p

I admit the characters are annoying and I have little care for them, but I just really enjoy it.

For me the story and characters are actually more important than the gameplay in a JRPG for me (within reason, by this i mean the gameplay could just be a generic affair, but if the storyline and characters were outstanding i'd still enjoy it).

It just seemed to lack all of the heart that so many other titles from this generation offer. While the characters in Lost Odyssey were rather lifeless (i put this down to character/technical design and rather drab voice acting) you could tell the developers cared about them.

If you like story and character, definitely pick up MagnaCarta 2. I was gutted when I finished it, absolutely gutted. I have the temptation to buy it just to play it again, which is really weird for me.

What's your point? It's pretty decent, its not outstanding or even very good by JRPG standards, but there's no way someone can argue it has no merits what so ever.

The only real reason it gets so much flak is because it is a Final Fantasy game and because of this higher standards of storytelling are expected from it. If you take away the name what's left is a perfectly playable JRPG, nothing special by any means, but certainly worth the outing for someone who's a fan of JRPGs.

It's not even a decent JRPG though - even if you ignore the fact it's a Final Fantasy game.

Why?

- It's easy
- The writing is atrocious - within the first 5 minutes of the game words like "Fal'Cie", "L'Cie", "Gran Pulse" are thrown around very regularly.
- It's extremely linear
- It has one side quest (collectively, the monster challenges)
- The combat system takes 20 hours to get interesting.
- It has no towns
- Very basic equipment
- No character customisation

For some reason, people seem to think these flaws can be ignored. The game has a few positives (graphics, the music, err, a couple of the boss monsters in the side quest) but the sheer crappiness of the game dwarfs these.

If it actually had a decent storyline a lot of these would be forgiveable but that's even sub par. There's absolutely no way someone can be taken seriously if they think FFXIII is a good game.

It's simple. You think FFXIII is decent? You have no taste*.

Yeah always with those trolling pictures or gifs.

Or maybe, just maybe, you're too blinkered to accept other people have opinions differing from your own (the disclaimer at the end is nonsensical as dictating that other people have no taste is writing off their own opinions so why should we heed yours?). I did have a few counterpoints spring to mind but looking at your post history it seems you have a fetish for FFXIII hate anyway, so this is a pointless debate.

At the end of the day the Op has asked people to recommend JRPGs that people feel are good, several have recommended FFXIII, it's their prerogative to do so, move on.

I've finished pretty much every 360 jrpg and I've dabbled with the PS3 ones.

I'd say the top jrpgs are Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, FFXIII and Demons Souls.
My middle tier includes The Last Remnant, Magna Carta 2, Enchanted Arms and Star Ocean IV (though only played this a little).
My low end jrpgs include Infinite Undiscovery and Phantasy Star Universe
I personally thought Eternal Sonata was an abomination and wouldn't even rank it.

I'd also give a nod to the PSP as it's had some of the finest jrpgs of the last 5 or so years.

I didn't mind it being easy for the most part, though to finish all the monster quests and get the full 1k/platinum trophy was actually quite tough at times.

Linearity, all jrpgs are pretty linear and open travel sections only appear in some after a set time usually half way through game etc. Jrpgs put more emphasis on narrative and use the linear story method unlike wrpgs like Oblivion. If you don't like linear story rpgs why are you playing jrpgs?

The combat system does take too long to get going. I think they wanted to keep people interested and not give them everything right from the start. I didn't mind it too much but I can understand some people not liking it.

You're right it had no towns though the equipment with crafting could get quite involved late game. I did love the xp progression system though again could be seen as quite linear for each character. If you take the xp system along with the roles system the game did become quite customisable as to how you approached it re. combat.

The game also looked staggeringly good.

Thats it, next week is going to be an expensive one. Going to buy myself a 360 and a Wii, Second hand, 12 month warranty from that shop that sells nothing but 2nd hand stuff.

Think I'll pick up Lost Odyssey and Fragile dreams to begin with, Both cheap. And I never completed Lost Odyssey the first time around. And for some reason I'm drawn to Fragile Dreams. May grab FF13 for PS3 aswell, I played it on 360 last time, I may actually get to see first hand if the visual differences are as big as what some of the comparison sites showed.

I couldn't get on with Blue Dragon, it felt too immature to me. I like my games to have a realistic basis. I know that sounds daft considering the genre. But hopefully you get what I mean

Looking to pick up some of these in the next few weeks but I'm struggling to find high street shops that stock them. The websites for the obvious places show pretty much every game listed here as "out of stock", quite pathetic really.

Might have to see if I can pick them up pre owned.

Just bought Tales of Vesperia on xbox live, i used points instead of credit card so it actually worked out about £16-17 instead of £20 which was nice!

All you people buying stuff from the list, you owe it to yourselves to get Xenoblade Chronicles!

It's definitely a good excuse to use the Wii again.

Don't forget the upcoming releases of The Last Story and Pandora's Tower.

And also recently announced, Dragon Quest X (Also for the Wii-U), which will have online functionality.

Seriously, the Wii is getting some very good JRPG love before it's end.
