Lets talk mince pies

I don't even think I can get jars of mince meat over here dammit. No doubt I'll have to import it in from somewhere at the cost of 9 million euros per jar.

Just make it, dead easy and any good homemade Mince pie has to have homemade mince meat.

Just mix raisins, sultanas, currents, cranberries, glacé cherries, walnuts with butter, small amount of water, brandy and mix of spices like ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg. Either let it rest in fridge for a few days or simmer gently for 40 minutes or so.

Dead easy and tastes great.

I'm going to be keeping my eye on this thread... I think I'll try looking in some bakeries/markets too this year :)

Otherwise home made is best.

Well I've tried Waitrose all butter & M&S versions this week, pretty good.
Got some home made ones to try out soon. :)

Got pies, crappy crappy kippling ones, no fresh ones in tesco, despite ahving all the bother crappy x-mas stuff out, that shouldnt be in shops till the 1st of dec.

Sainsburys "Taste the Difference" Mince pies with the brandy butter. Best thing about crimbo.

I make mine, they're not a difficult thing to do, just almond pastry from the freezer and mincemeat I jarred up months ago.

At most I buy from the bakery (man I love living near a bakery now), them ones in the shops aren't much cop, the filling and indeed the pastry is bland.

I made some on Saturday night. I was surprised at how much better they were than shop bought ones

Oh my days - MAKE YOUR OWN!!!

1x Large Jar of Mince Meat <£2 for asda's own
1x block of hard baking marge <£1
Plain flour <£1
A bit of water

Rub the marge and flour together until you have a bread crumb consistency
Add water and make the pastry with your hands
Leave in the fridge for 30 mins to 'rest'
Roll out and cut out circles
On one half of circle add mince meat, fold over other half and press edges together
Put on a baking tray and cook for 20 mins on 200 (fan oven)
Remove, cool and serve

You don't even need any special tins or cutters this way! You have mince parcels!
Bit of milk on the edge to 'seal' the pastry together and you can also make LOADS of them!

I made mine last night (actual pies tho) going to do more next weekend - will post pics :p

Baking marge? replace this with Butter surely?

But yea make your own using decent stuff and they be miles better than any shop bought.

I thought it was all about Aldi mince pies this year.

Mince pies - best and worst
The top-scoring Best Buy Aldi luxury mince pies were also the cheapest on test. They had a lush and juicy filling and looked good, as did Best Buy Lidl’s with their ********* motif.

Which?

I refuse to acknowledge mince pies, like turkey and sprouts. Why eat ****e that you wouldn't eat any other time of year? Roast beef followed by apple crumble this Christmas for me
