Lets talk Vodka!! (I'd rather Drink Vodka myself)

I do have a bottle of the Smirnoff Cinnamon flavoured with the gold leaf in. The only think i mix is with is Appeltiser. Not much else you can mix cinnamon with i dont think

Wyborowa and Zubrowka were my bottles of choice. Ice cold and down the hatch, none of this mixing lark. Oh and for those special occasions try some Polish Pure White Spirit, it adds hairs to your chest... :p

more expensive vodka do tend to taste nice straight but by that they just burn less IMO as for taste there isn't much is there?

i can't stand whisky unless it's with coke. vodka i can drink with anything. i really like a rum and coke.

this link is interesting.

i think the whole more expensive alcohol is just a ploy. i have 2 bottles of crystal skull, belvedere intense, russian standard, grey goose, ciroc, etc all in my collection but tbh nothing really beats russian standard after the first 2-4 you can't tell the difference. i will collect one of each premium vodka just to have in my collection i won't buy more to drink i think it's mainly placebo effect.

i was at a party serving goose and another serving belvedere when it ran out and switched to smirnoff (which used to be my regular before russian standard) i couldn't tell the difference tbh.

if your drinking neat then sure buy something around £20-£30 per 70cl, if mixing buy something around £15-£20 per 70cl.

cheaper stuff like glens, vodkat is just turps.

i would like to hear what peoples thoughts are on the best bang for buck?

russian standard
zubrowka
ketel one
stoli
absolut
green mark

which one??????

I'm also a fan of Russian Standard, after trying various premium vodkas, to me RS is the one that offers the best taste for your money.

I only go for the top end stuff such as Glens vodka instead of Tesco home brand. I mix it with Diet Boost and drink it from a chilled wine glass with my pinky finger pointing out.

sipsmith for me.

Sipsmith is a very nice gin, Im on silent pool at the minute quite complex botanicals.

Vodka, kauffman soft private vintage collection, worth every penny.
if you want to taste Vodka drink it at room temp.

My most expensive 'standard' bottle at the moment (I'm quite dry in the cupboard for now, my Belvedere, Grey Goose and Boru have all gone) is a Gold Russian Standard. It's nice, but no Belvedere.

Ciroc is nice, Ketel One is nice (I like the Citron), Russian Standard is OK and I have a bottle of Pinky as well which is a botanical vodka. It's certainly different.

I won't drink Smirnoff and below these days. The lowest I'll go I suppose is Stoli.

I do have a Crystal Head too, but I wouldn't recommend it. You're paying for the bottle, the produce is not ropey but certainly not worth the outlay.

It's always been my understanding that grey goose isn't actually better vodka than say Smirnoff?

I thought it was just some genius who saw a gap for "premium vodka" smacked a fancy label that made it premium and bottled up normal vodka and sold it for £xx more than others?

This last part is undoubtedly true. The brand and price point came before the drink itself existed. Read about the man with the big idea (Sidney Frank) for more.

Interesting, I'll definitely buy based on blind tests in future, e.g. this San Francisco World Spirits Competition (which incidentally Grey Goose has never got an award in, and most drinks get at least Bronze).

Tend to stick to Polish Vodkas due to the gf:

Zubrowka
Wyborowa (With a mixer)
Belvedere

Has anyone tried Starka? It's aged for about 10 years in an oak barrel, that absolutely destroys me!

And yea, if drinking properly, the vodka should be kept in the freezer and not put into a mixer. Drink it straight from a shot glass.

There are some great vodkas out there and despite the general commentary on how tasteless it can be, it's also one of the spirits with the widest room to manoeuvre in terms of the fermenting and distillation process, much like rum. This can work wonderfully, or terribly being open to both creative interpretation and downright abuse. In my mind, brands like Smirnoff are the pinnacle of abuse when it comes to the name and quality of vodka as a serious spirit. Sure it began in Moscow, now the bottle you buy could be distilled in one of about 6 countries, most likely the UK.

Anyway rant over, some excellent "clean vodkas":
Reyka
Belvedere
Snow Queen
Snow Leopard
Tovaritch!
Stolichnaya Red or Gold
Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka

Some great vodkas with a more intense/creamy flavour (these are really sipping vodkas with the exception of Zubrowka, Ketel One and Adnams which make some excellent cocktail mixers):
Zubrowka
Adnams Longshore
Ketel One
Konik's Tail
Vestal Blended Potato Vodka (really quite declicious on it's own - perfect for a vodka martini)
Arbikie Potato Vodka
Belvedere Unfiltered
Stolichnaya Blue or Elit

IMO If you're serious about vodka, all these are worth a look. A lot of people seem to rate grey goose in particular for it's smoothness; the reality is that it is nice enough and has a phenomenal marketing campaign behind it but it really is nothing special for the price. There are vastly superior smooth filtered vodkas available at equivalent or lower prices, as listed above.

And yea, if drinking properly, the vodka should be kept in the freezer and not put into a mixer. Drink it straight from a shot glass.

I don't freeze mine, I drink it at room temperature (you only need it from the freezer if it's cheap) and I don't shoot it, I sip it, so it goes into a tumbler like a good whisky should.

Sainsbury's best offering is Stolichnaya Red @ £20

If you happen to have a Waitrose in vicinity pop in and get yourself a bottle of Reyka for £26

I got a Russian Standard for £16 at Sainsbury's :)

Not tried Stoli red I don't think, but I'd struggle to choose which was better between RS and Stoli.
