Letter through "Notice of Intended Prosecution" Average cam on M'way

I thought measured over 2 consecutive sections. If you are over average (and above the set limit) it would ticket you. However nobody seems to know anyone who has been sent a NIP for it, until now!

I guess this dispells that myth that the SPECS zones didnt work :(

Indeed. Lots and lots of people will be used to driving through that stretch at over 50mph by now also :(

I recall someone telling me that the avg cams work over predefined sections which can contain two or more cameras, something to do with how accurately they can judge distances over straights and bends or some such. But I'm tired so that may just be some gunk my brain excreted.

Oh the SPECS systems do indeed work.
The very first release had an issue with vehicles switching lanes - but that was fixed pretty quickly.

The system works on a number of "gates" and these can be changed on the fly and at will.
So you never know which cameras are "start & finish" units.
You could be "started" at the first camera you see and "finished" at the next, or there could be 5 or 6 cameras between your start and finish.

They do seem to work on the well tried Speed +10% +2, so on a 50mph you should be able to go at around 57 before being caught.
As this would be what, an indicated 60mph on the speedo really cannot see the point in anyone complaining if they get caught.

If I'm on that section of the M25 I hit 55mph and then hit Cruise - really not worth the risk.

See, for me, arguing it is part and parcel of the game of life.

This!! I accepted I was speeding when I got done but still tried to get out of it, why wouldn't I? It only took 5 minutes to write the letter?

Plus I got a cool photo from the police:p

I've said it before and will say it again to all those who advocate following pepipoo's advice - be careful.
I was done for speeding and followed their advice to the letter with lots of posts on how nobody using the procedure I was using had ever been prosecuted. It would appear I was the first person then, as instead of 3 points and £60 fine I got 4 points and a £250 fine.

I dare say they have helped people out, but use your own judgement.

It sounds like you're new to this and haven't had a NIP before. If that's the case there is a strong chance you'll get a speed awareness course.
I'd take it as you'll not get the points that way.

Request to see the photo so you can identify the driver. If you can't; you can probably get off it with appropriate shenanigans.

Otherwise, suck it up.

Also, exactly how dim do you have to be to get caught by an average speed camera? Did you think they were just making it up or something?

You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to get off with "I don't know who was driving".
That excuse goes down as well as "My dog ate my homework".

When it's just you and a partner and the offence was only a couple of weeks ago the courts really don't believe the "we just don't know".

You really need to think back.
If you honestly cannot then go for it.
But failing to furnish is 6pts and a higher fine than the 3pts and £60 for the speeding offence.

Did you get out of it?

I was sent on a drivers awareness course. Whether they would have sent me on the course had I not contested is unknown, but like I say, it was hardly an inconvenience to write that short letter.

It's not unknown at all, I'd imagine its almost certain you got exactly the same outcome you'd have got had you not written the letter.

Why not write to Vodafone and dispute your next months mobile phone bill as well, it probably wont work but its worth a try right? :p

You're probably right, but in my case (I don't know if you remember) I was caught doing 38 in a 30, but within metres of entering a 40, maybe they decided to be a bit more lenient after putting my point across?

Only a court has that sort of descretion and your case never made it to court.

You got what you'd have got anyway :p

Yep! I'll be emailing a few people later about this as I know plenty who drive that stretch twice a day :(

I did get a bit miffed though heading towards Cardiff, after the Brynglass Tunnels in Newport, that was all 50 aswel before, however they still have the overhead camera's, but that stretch is the normal limit now

Do you know why they changed this bit? I know the stretch leading back to the Coldra seems to be a bit of an accident spot over the years.

I have that stretch twice a day.

Out of interest do you live around Newport?

Nah, live in Bristol but was working in Cardiff for over a year.

I think the section after the tunnels was only there while the middle concrete stuff was being done, so should be removed fully soon.
The other stuff is just general traffic calming and was planned to be permanent to some level iirc.
