So it's been a while since I let the monkey out with GD.

The Zen of Drinking Alone.

How many of you motley lot drink alone? It's something I very much enjoy on a Friday night. Me, a bottle of Jameson and Warren Zevon; but the common conception seems to be that this is the reserve of the problem drinker. My flatmate has recently taken to pointing out my alcohol intake - in the region of 50-70 units per week - as being problematic, something I don't agree with.

Is there an 'art' to drinking? Learning to understand and appreciate your limits? I've found that a lot of my work is centred around the watering hole - especially with clients, which means maintaining a significant degree of professionalism whilst not refusing a drink.

Bottoms up, GD! ;)

I do it a lot, i enjoy a few drinks every other night or so, usually in the form of a few dark ales, continental beers or cask aged beers, something strong with lots of flavour, dont get drunk though.

IMO theres a difference between drinking by yourself and getting drunk by yourself.
one suggests an underlying problem, the other one is just relaxing and enjoying the finer things in life.

I agree, but 50-70 units a week is bangin' on the door of alcoholism. (And liver disease)

Drinking alone is called alcoholism.

Rubbish.

I drink on my own quite frequently and under the recommended limit. Drinking with others in town is boring as they talk about work or other things that I have no interest in. I socialise with others in the real world without drink. If i drank at home with others I would and have drunk way too much. I drink less alone.

I enjoy a bottle of beer after work sometimes (once a week) with dinner but I feel wierd drinking more than that by myself. No judgement on others who do, just that I would feel comfortable drinking more in social situations.

Weird; is that due to peer/social conditioning?

For me the problem surrounds the amount consumed, not the location.

Is that under the driving limit or under the 'drunk' limit? or are you sitting there thinking 'whats the difference?'

50-70 a week?!?! MAD!

Couldn't cope with that at uni....

There isn't an art to drinking, just coping with it...

Also letting the monkey out probably is an euphemism for exposing your self in public ;)
