LG 34GK950G, 3440x1440, G-Sync, 120Hz

i refunded my aw34. got a really bad panel with severe ips glow (no blb tho), yellow tint once it got very warm (it was weirdly warm after 8 hours of gaming) and i couldnt oc it above 100hz. not gonna play fast paced games in 100fps its disgusting.. so 1300 euros refunded :D

That's fair enough, and sorry to hear you went through the hassle, especially when paying full price! For both the Alienware and the LG monitor, there will always be some defective monitors shipped, but there should be more good than bad, and we have to hope that retailers and manufacturers do a good job of assisting when things do go wrong.

For me at lesst £615 is an amazing price. What are your thoughts on the Dell?

I've had it for a few months now and I really like it, but I may be blissfully ignorant, because I've moved from a 23" 60Hz TN Dell monitor that I've had for years... calibration may not be perfect, and the LG might be better... but I may never know! However, with the £600 difference I could also buy a 1080Ti... that quickly puts things into perspective. Right now though, my 1070 is doing a good job.

Build is solid. There is a bit of glow from both bottom corners, but I think some glow is to be expected, but I only see it when testing with a black screen, never with content on screen. Monitor movement up/down, tilt, etc is very good, though a bit stiff (but means it stays put after adjusting). The stand looks big, but it actually fits on my desk quite nicely, so better than expected.

The glow in the bottom left corner does appear worse than you would want, but all those shots of the 950G appear to be from a slightly higher position than I would typically view from (i.e. the monitor height is too low).

Received Alienware AW3418DW today. While it is noticeably better with glow than 950G (and significantly worse with everything else, literally) it is still far from the quality of my UC98. So generally my UC98 broke (stuck pixels and two permanent white horizontal lines on the bottom of the display) and almost 3 years later I will be buying it again because the quality of ultrawides went backwards since then. Someone should get a freaking innovation of the century award. Maybe I will try 38" 3840x1600 just to make it at least some upgrade, because buying the same UC98 again would be ridiculous.

The decrease in general performance on 950G and AW3418DW is far too significant vs UC98 for me to accept. UC98 is just outclassing both with picture quality, especially way less glow. I am sending both back on Monday. I really underestimated UC98. I loved it from the first day, but I could see some flaws and wanted to upgrade. Now I see how good it is.

Compared to current models, I wouldn't consider the UC98 to be a gaming monitor, as it is restricted to 75Hz. Also, many in this thread prefer to have GSync (since this thread is primarily about the 950G). The UC98 looks more like a productivity monitor to me, so I'm not surprised that picture quality is better... however, your UC98 may be a particularly good unit, and others may not be so good.

This is common and globally very damaging misconception and stereotype, that gaming is only playing some e-sports FPS crap over and over and if you don't have "gaming" everything in your setup then this is not even gaming. This is exactly why gamers are treated like idiots by all manufacturers with embarrassing marketing and design and heavily compromised quality of products, and also this is why gaming in commonly considered a low form of spending time for retarded 12 year olds.

You are right and wrong, IMHO. Many games are very good at 60Hz, however, faster moving games such as FPS and racing games, for example, definitely benefit from a higher refresh rate. As a PC and gaming enthusiast, my interests span a whole range of games. For me, a gaming monitor should be good across the whole spectrum of games, not only excelling in those games that suit a lower refresh rate. When I say a gaming monitor, I'm talking about screen specs and function, not shiny lights.

seeing as I work directly with Amazon I can tell you it doesn't lol

Black Friday is the day after Thanks Giving in the US, which is always the fourth Thursday of November in the US (22 Nov 2018), therefore the Friday is 23 Nov... I don't think Amazon have the power to change this! Black Friday is 23 Nov this year.

Yes obviously, but the point Daniel is making is that Black Friday sales - what people often refer to as just "Black Friday" even if it's not really correct - will start beforehand. And they will. Probably on the Monday of that week. Different retailers operate differently, and often different suppliers will stagger their promotional launch dates (which generally means retailer support - among other things brands give money to retailers for each unit of specific items sold, which can usually be claimed as a discount on a future order with that supplier - this allows the retailer to price the item lower than would normally be possible) as well.

My point is that Black Friday is not the creation of Amazon, despite what Amazon would like people to think. Also, @Lliam is correct in his statement that Black Friday is 23 Nov... this cannot be disputed.

7. Effects of Cancellation
7.1 If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery https://www.overclockers.co.uk/terms-and-conditions

not really "shrug" man. its serious to me, because no other shop does this. every shop orders their couriers to your doorstep. its a small amount to pay for them, but it would cost me around 100 euros to send back a box like a monitor back to uk

For distance selling, EU law says that if you cancel an order within 14 days of receipt, and then return within next 14 days, you should be refunded the cost of the item and the delivery charge. However, the seller does not have to cover the cost of return shipment... this is where PayPal's offer of paying return postage up to £15 is very useful... can you pay with PayPal on OcUK?

However, PayPal don't offer the same level of protection that paying on credit card offers, at least in the UK.

I'm not entirely certain on this... I know it is often said that you lose Section 75 protection when using PayPal, however, I've had confirmation from MBNA that using PayPal with their credit card gives the exact same level of protection as using the card direct... maybe it depends on the card issuer (or MBNA lied to me)

I contacts the place of purchase and will be asking for an exchange. But I believe I have to pay the return shipping/insurance which I think is wrong.

I'm pretty certain that the seller should cover shipping for exchanging a faulty product, because they are "in the wrong" having supplied a faulty product, not because you've simply changed your mind.

@Stu Did you go with one of these in the end?

I posted a little in the Alienware AW3418DW thread then bought one in July 2018. You were hanging on to compare with this LG as I remember...

Reality kicked in last summer when the Alienware was on sale, which I picked up for £615 after discounts. I would have preferred the LG if price wasn't a factor, but even back then the LG was looking like it would be at least £1100... £500 difference was just too much, and I didn't think the LG would be sufficiently better to justify.

I am still actively following this thread though :)

Anyone that bought the 950G now have buyer's remorse with news that the 950F appears to be GSYNC compatible? Generally speaking I think GSYNC monitors will still perform better than Freesync models, which typically lower lag and better response times, however, I don't know if all users can identify these differences that are still at the millisecond scale, and in the case of this LG model, the Freesync model does bring more features to the table with (limited) HDR, wider colour gamut and higher refresh rate... if I was chosing, the GSYNC model is difficult to justify, especially at a higher price.
