LG to unveil HDR monitors at CES 2017

Yup it is IPS unfortunately :(

It will be interesting to see HDR in action, I have a feeling it isn't going to be the full proper HDR thus prepare for possible disappointment....

My concern with OLED is the response times, I game from my sofa using a TV, and I have been looking at a new TV for gaming and obviously general TV watching, OLED looks stunning, but the response times are appalling for gaming

OLED is "superior" than any LCD tech out there for response times (motion clarity), it is the input lag, which is the problem, although iirc, that is not down to the panels but down to the other components that are used in TV's + TV's have a lot more going on in the background i.e. the smart software crap than monitors which also adds input lag.

The "response time" they mention is so low for OLED is "theoretical" response time of isolated OLED light.

Problem is, it quite harder to drive (because much higher voltage required) and no one yet achieved driving OLED pixels in a matrix at theoretical max speed.

????????? Oled TVs response time may be but in theory OLED monitors should have faster response times than any IPS monitor.

OLED monitors should have faster response times yes

I think the HDR technology is that of the TV made to work on a monitor so I hope it does not disappoint

Honestly I just want some idea of how long it's going to take for OLED monitors to actually hit the market from someone who knows what they are talking about.

Are we likely to see any next year or are we going to have to wait until 2020 or something like that?

Going to OLED is too much too soon for greedy companies. We will be drip fed with useless tech right up to the point where there is not much profit left in it for them.

That was my biggest concern when I bought the B6V

So far I've tested PC at 4k/60hz (GTA V and BF1), PS4 at 1080p and Xbox One S with 1080p/HDR

I was playing the games using an Xbox One wireless controller.

Using 'game' mode for the standard dynamic range games, I did not notice any input lag. Rtings quote 43ms for the B6 OLED but others have tested less than that.

When playing Forza Horizon 3 in HDR on Xbox One S I did notice it a bit. You turn the wheel and it happens on screen a split second later. Not ideal, but LG are soon going to release a firmware update for the B6 models to add a 'Game' mode to HDR content which should bring it down.

The C6 and E6 OLEDs already have the HDR game mode firmware update and tests have the input lag at approx 34ms now.

And for comparison I have an X34a desktop monitor which is 100hz and input lag of 9ms

I think input lag would be more noticeable if you were gaming with a mouse and keyboard due to the more instant response you get from a mouse vs controller, but like you said you game from your sofa...

Nice post, I do game with a Razer Turret lapboard so I do indeed still use K/M. Interestingly you mentioned firmware updates to bring down the input lag, I have asked about that very possibility on other forums and I was pretty much laughed at, saying it's impossible. I'll be keeping a keen eye on the CES 2017 before I get a new TV now I know OLED isn't as bad for gaming as a thought. Cheers

well, I have an 55EG910V It's an LG OLED TV and It's amazing. If these new monitors are as good then I would definitely recommend buying one!!

I have the xbox one connected to mine and I haven't noticed any input lag in games especially since LG released a firmware upgrade that improved it a lot.

I've actually gamed at 60hz at 60fps on a tv with keyboard and mouse before and 25-35 ms input lag is actually not too bad. VA panel response times are another thing though, yucky smeary motion, really poor on many tv's although a few are better, kind of like VA monitors kind of poor. IPS is mostly better in this regard but with IPS glow etc, no thanks. OLED combines better than TN response times for perfect motion and has no other annoying issues and is perfect for HDR, the only worry is screen retention.

I foresee more bleed and glow issues on the horizon... a problem that won't be going anywhere until OLED takes hold. Seems that polarizers have all been forgotten about (which would rectify IPS glow), and bleed seems to be excused by most people now as something you should just expect as the norm, which is pretty disgraceful IMO. As Lambchop states, I certainly don't think we'll be seeing OLED anytime soon... they will milk LCD and HDR for every last drop over the next 2-3 years before that happens. We've not even heard about Freesync and G-Sync variants yet, plus ultrawide, so they've got plenty of mileage here to drag out.

Yup getting incredibly fed up with the "milking" in the monitor sector now (well the PC market in general tbh but that is a discussion for another topic...)

Absolute joke the price these new "high end" monitors come out at too, why on earth would I spend £900+ on a 34" 1440 VA/IPS monitor when I can get a superior display in pretty much every way (except for input lag and no free/g sync) for another £800+ pounds, in the grand scheme of things, that isn't much more to pay, considering you are already paying a pretty high figure and how long said purchase is going to last etc.

If nothing of any excitement is shown at CES next year, I am jumping on the 55" 4k HDR OLED TV band wagon and I hope many others start to see some sense and buy TVs instead. That should give these monitor/panel manufacturers the kick up the back side they need...

In regards to OLED - I am not expecting anything in 2017, I think it will be more like Q1 2018 before we see anything

:(

Shame. i knew that would be the case as after all, what we get to see in shows we sometimes dont even get to buy for another year.

Still don;t understand why oled is taking so long to come to pc monitors. Suppose it gives me longer to save and I wil just have to live with my 4k IPS screen till then. Or buy a TV.

Just get a 55"+ 4k HDR OLED TV.

I'll be shocked if we even see a consumer priced friendly OLED monitor in 2018, aside from the dell 30" 120HZ 4K (which iirc, is rumoured to be $5k lel... not even got g or free sync from what I can see), we haven't seen or heard of a single prototype from any other manufacturers (Sony have some for the extreme professional market).

You can bet that when we do see them, guaranteed they will cost more than a 55" 4K HDR OLED TV, currently £1700, by 2018, that model will most likely be <£1500

EDIT:

As for why it is taking so long;

1. burn in - somewhat been sorted with the new gen TV's though but obviously, monitor/PC usage is different to TV usage
2. due to the way business works, as in TV's having a far larger market than the monitor market amongst other reasons, essentially, it will just cost far too much to sell a good spec OLED monitor for a price that most people would be willing to pay. Most people are reluctant to spend more than £500 on a monitor so they most certainly aren't going to spend £1500/2000+ on one, especially when TVs are stupidly cheap in comparison
3. LCD milking isn't done yet ;)

EDIT 2:

Also, if monitor manufacturers insist on milking LCD for as long as they can, then please, at least add polarizers back into the game for IPS:

Well that isn't too bad I suppose. I just hope LG's first attempt at an OLED monitor is a good one.

It would be a huge shame if an OLED monitor finally hits the market but it's spoiled by something silly like no vesa mount, terrible controls, huge bezels or poor QC or lacks the bells-and-whistles that are already expected in a premium monitor today, let alone in 2018, such as 4k / Ultrawide, gsync / freesync, high refresh rate, low latency, decent colour accuracy, probably HDR. It could be the ultimate no-compromises monitor for gaming / movies / whatever.

Is the 34UC99 ultrawide mentioned in the article a 3440x1440 panel? It says 1ms, does that mean it's VA? Surely can't be IPS at that speed? It states Freesync, but will it be at least 100Hz?

What a shame. Unless the 8K monitor which you guys are releasing Q2 2017 is a decent price, I will be keeping my Dell 4K monitor for another year or so.
