LG TV has lasted 4 years - do I have any rights?

I bought a TV from Currys back on the 29th April 2011 and last night the HDMI sockets decided to stop working! :(

I've tried various HDMI cables and from 2 different sources and so I'm pretty certain it's just the HDMI ports that are borked! (I can view Sky through the SCART lead though!?!)

Do I have any rights since I'm undoubtedly outside any standard warranty that LG offer? Surely a TV should reasonably be expected to work for more than 4 years???

I'm trying to contact LG but they aren't the easiest to get hold of and even when I do, I'm sure they will just try and fob me off!

Thanks for any advice...

I'd say you're going to really struggle after 4 years to get any sort of fix without having to pay for it, you'd have to prove the fault was there when it was manufactured and not due to someone tugging on a HDMI cable or something like that.

4 years isn't a reasonable amount of time for a TV to last, so you do have rights. Exercising them might be a problem with Currys though.

You're going to struggle with this. They will take you round in circles and at the end they will say it was damaged due to misuse.

LG have been less than useless so I'll e-mail Currys to see what they say!

Not expecting anything but you never know - as long as it's not costing me anything but time I quite like a bit of an argument with big corporations! :D

I wouldn't usually have to be honest - this was a bit of an impulse buy for the bedroom and I don't think it was hugely expensive, which is why I'm not a hell of a lot angrier!

Had a similar issue with a 2012 42“ LG smart TV. Hdmi ports went after 3 years 4 months. Wasn't happy and bought a new TV but since found to repair the sockets will be about 60 quid all in (local TV repair)

after 12 months it's down to the manufacturer IIRC.

Negative. Your contract of sale is between you and the retailer. It is an implied (but mandatory, as enshrined in both SOGA and the CRA) contract term that goods supplied by the retailer are of the quality that one would reasonably expect.

If the TV is of such low quality that it's HDMI port stops working; the retailer has breached the terms of the contract of sale and your recourse is accordingly to the retailer.

you need to pay for a technician at your own expense to prove it's a manufacturing fault and not through wear and tear then your covered by the sales of goods act (5-6 years from purchase depending on if your in england or scotland).

the cost of doing this you may as well pay someone to fix it. you can usually buy parts off ebay, etc and take apart the tv and replace it like for like.

or just pay an engineer to fix it.

you could speak to currys and ask as a goodwill gesture would they be willing to fix it or pay 50% of the cost of a fix but without an engineers report they technically don't need to do anything.

you have to prove the fault was there when you bought it and not through wear and tear.

otherwise i could break the hdmi on my tv and ask for a new one

unless you have taken out currys care plan you won't have any chance of any rights out side the standard yr warranty.your contract is with currys not lg.
the best plan is to ask currys how much to repair it and tell them its your 80yr old gran tv and she can't live without it and she can't afford an new one. you never know untill you you ask them.
the other alternative you got have you got any house contents insurance ? you was dusting and slip at the back of the tv as you was falling you grab the tv to break your fall knocking the tv off the tv stand and since then the hdmi inputs are not working . simple

first of all he does have rights - soga covers you for 5-6 years if its a manufacturing defect and the item is supposed to last a reasonable length of time.

second of all only a moron would claim this on house insurasance. it would put his premium up for the next 5 years as well as the excess he would probably need to pay. he would be better off buying a new tv.

third of all always buy tv's from john lewis they come with 5 year warranty as standard and their customer service is second to none
