Lightroom 4 now available

Are you guys buying your retail box versions direct from Adobe or elsewhere?

ALso can anyone who has actually got it report back on any performance issues incurred? Im using a quad core i7 imac with 16gig ram so guess I probably wont notice any performance issues too much.

I just downloaded direct from Adobe.

I was a bit concerned about performance from all the complaints you see. I've got a Dell m6400 laptop with 8GB RAM and it runs fine. Some things are quicker than 3 others are slightly slower. There are people with far more powerful systems than mine who have issues though, so it's hard to say how it will run for you.

On another note I can't say I'm particularly enjoying LR4, much prefer LR3 at the minute but I guess I just need to spend more time with it.

I wasn't expecting it to be as different as it is for processing. I thought there would just be some new features. Serves me right for not bothering with the beta or trial really!

I did exactly the same and I'm kinda regretting buying it if I'm honest. I really dont like that functions called the same thing in both versions do totally different things.

I'll get used to it I suppose but I don't seem to remember having this opinion when I bought LR3.

Not sure I'm liking LR4 either yet, although I'll persist with it. The one thing that seems really "broken" for me is Auto tone. I generally give it a go and see if that, or my original exposure, is the best starting point; but I've yet to have a single image that it doesn't make a right pig's ear of so far - with blown highlights and ridiculously high contrast (almost lomo-like)

I like the update. The dedicated CA checkbox in lens profile section is handy and re-worked highlight/shadow sliders are better IMO too.

I had to let it update my RAW directory over a few hours though as it was asking to update each picture I selected within LR so I selected the parent directory and updated everything for the new parameters.

So far so good.

No performance issues but then again I wasn't expecting any such issues anyway.

Viruses yes, legal action no.

I use a licensed version of LR, but actually found an incredibly simple way of avoiding the license using the official Adobe download.

Not sure if it works with LR4, but with previous version you had a 30 day free trial from the date you installed the software, the date being read from windows and not a server. Put 1 and 1 together....
Virus free official download.

Still illegal though.

All legit here :D

how are the people that werent liking it finding it now

did you get used to it? or still not liking it?

I'm no expert or anything but I'm getting used to it now. For me overall I much prefer it to LR3 in terms of the new sliders. Also so far the chromatic abration tick box has been flawless.

The main complaint i still have though is with sluggishness when moving sliders (not significant but still noticable) and it takes ages to export photos (4 pics took about 30 secs). I wish the sliders could be made more extreme like +/-150

I'd say its worth the upgrade

I still haven't used it a great deal but I must be doing something wrong. The new sliders don't seem to offer anything like the latitude I'm used to with LR3. I keep persevering with the new 2012 process but it's tempting to drop back to the 2010 process which would make the upgrade pretty worthless to me.

Do you get anything useful with the boxed version? I just went for the download as I'm impatient :D

Just packaging that's hard to put back together :)

Despite my entire photography collection being digital I still have an irrational need to have a £100 piece of software delivered on a DVD. Odd!

LR 4.1RC is available and supports 5Dmk3 as well as addressing slider performance issues when in develop mode using 2 monitors, I have to say for me it seems to have solved the issues and my LR is now useable again.

I was about to hit the buy button on this (it's a nice step up from my cheap & cheerful combination of Picasa for easy edits & uploads and Bibble Lite for anything which needs more work or noise reduction), but then I started to think I might want a few more editing features. The brush is very useful in problem areas, but its very painstaking, and something with layers and "magic" area selection might be nice to have.

Photoshop is way, way beyond my price bracket (I'd rather spend that kind of money on glass). So I DLed Elements and... And it reminds me why I gave up trying to find an editor I liked! :-) Nice features, but an interface which just winds me up.

I've got another four weeks of trial to decide what to do, but at the moment I'm reluctant to spend £100 on something I know is missing features I might want. Yet I like Lightroom's interface, and it's definitely a step up from the toolkit I have available now.

Decisions, decisions!

Edit: After spending more time with tutorials and youtube I've realised Lightroom does pretty much everything I want. I'm going to give the trial period another week or two while I investigate further, but I'm increasingly impressed.

Still waiting for the next patch to move out of release candidate status. I find LR4 to be very slow performance wise, particularly using brushes. Probably take Adobe another patch at least to get it up to a decent working state.
