Currently have an i2500k clocked, 8gig ram and a nvidia 970

Looking to upgrade mobo, cpu, ram as lightrooms is very slow, gaming is fine. So was looking to keep the gpu and spend more on the bundle

Do I go I8700k, splash out on an i7 7820x or i9 7900x, AMD, wait for the new AMD's? 16 or 32gig ram?

Have an Ssd, but was looking to put a new M.2 in as my Ssd is quite old.

Ideas welcome...

Depends what your doing, seems importing and converting favours core speed where as exporting favour cores.

I7 8700k with slight overclock would give you thread count but faster speeds then x299/Ryzen can provide

yeah, I was looking and different cpu's help different things in lightroom. I'm mainly importing, making changes, then exporting, so was thinking the i8700K is enough. Plus the gains on the more expensive cpu's are probably not worthy.

I can be exporting a few hundred photos at a time and currently that takes well over 1/2 hour on my current setup. I just walk away, lol.
But it also struggles in many other areas when modifying photos and even scrolling to the next ones.
When I import and put on a preset, it takes ages for the thumbnails to update.

Or go down the bundle route.....

What's your budget ?
Aorus 5 vrm are a lot better then the above Ultra 1.0 ( new version should hit stores in 2 weeks ) .
You won't stress the VRM as much as rendering that takes days but will be out under heavier load then gaming !
Another chip is the non K 8700... 6 cores 12 threads again, and all cores boost to 4.3ghz

Quick stab, sure Danny could tailor better.
Went with Aorus 5 due to VRM count - does have best audio if you'll ever do movies ?
Personally would wait for Ultra 2.0 board in roughly two weeks... BUT... Grab that 32GB of ram on sale now !!!!!! Good saving !!!!!

Interesting, only have a spinner for my catalogue. Could be some of my problem.
For 100quid I could just get another m.2

Guess around 1000/1200 is gonna be a sensible budget

Could spend more, but I don't see the point?

Could use Dan's scratch disk method, might not sure it. But it'll give you time to see Ultra 2.0 board to save cash for Intel if you like Gigabyte or.. come April see how Ryzen Refresh does on B450/x470 boards . Vrm design has been beefed up and looks like it'll run at much better core speeds to be closer on intels heels for speed, and win on core count.

Could well be. Better not test that out with the 2500K though, or you might find it harder to part with the money for that nice shiny 8700... :)

Ditto.

As for how much RAM, I'd get an Afterburner/Rivatuner (or similar) overlay up, and see what RAM usage you're hitting while working. Or simpler still - HWiNFO64 will monitor and record the current/mins/averages/maxes for you to peek at later.

I could wait, maybe a few weeks, but not sure till about April.

My current ram usage isn't max, but cpu is. The latest updates helped a bit, but no where near enough.

What's the difference between the crucial mx300 and Samsung drive, as one is 2000odd MBs and the other only 500. Big number difference, but what about real world performance, or have I read it wrong?

To be fair, you might be one of the few to use NVMe drives to their potential . Read and write speeds are triple that of standard SATA 3 SSD... But also half the space for the same price ...

Less goes wrong with air , fan breaks , easy to replace with any fan you can grab ;)

Yes, and the faster random IOPS will be very useful.

Just spotted this baby in the New products section:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £98.69 (includes shipping: £8.70)

Their four-heatpipe version was rated highly, albeit a bit expensive. Not recommending it as I haven't seen reviews yet, just leaving it here and going to find reviews now because... eight heat-pipes lol.

EDIT: Nah, nothing to write home about according to reviews.

Like Gigabyte /Aorus - based on evo and made by cooler master - though haven't checked in a while . Def looks like it's been beefed up from last version for sure.

But then again, any cooler being poor on coffeelake lies with Intel's TIM :(
