Hey guys just a quick one really

Is it worth me holding out a few more .months for zen 2 though I hear it's due June July which is abit away im planning for a new PC as my currently on is nearly 7 years old now
A devil canyon cup which was overclocked for 3 years then started crashing so had to down clock and now I get Random full system lock ups so really think I need a new PC now....

My only concern is how long I need to wait for zen 2 or should I just get a new build now ?

Any options appreciated

If you can hold out and make do for now i would say stick with it until June/July. I'm running the rig in my sig and long overdue an upgrade plus ive had a few random memory issues which im sure is down to a RAM slot starting to die but its usable and not too frequent so im holding out to see what Ryzen offers and what deals are available across the board once Ryzen drops

As above, if you can wait a few months then I would definitely hold for Zen 2. Otherwise if you feel you have to upgrade now I would go Ryzen and get a quality motherboard that will hopefully take one of the new Ryzens, there's others here better placed than me to advise on what boards those will be.

Personally, I'm in a similar boat to you. I want to upgrade, but with the prospect of Zen2 being on par if not better than Intel's current offering, possibly cheaper I'm going to adopt a wait and see strategy before I upgrade. Although I'm also very interested in how Intel's Ice Lake CPU based on Sunny Cove turns out, but the desktop version for that looks to be a way off, end of the year possibly.

wait and see how it performs against 9700k clocked and standard along with pricing .

If your Rig isn't going to last that long, would get flagship x470 and ryzen 1200/athlon for a very very basic and cheap stop gap then slap in ryzen 3000

Why not get a 5650x would be a big upgrade for £15

OP whatever you get will last you years. So if you need it now just get it.

Lol your not thw first person to say that. Due to the suspected dying memory slot its not really worth spending money on it to just change everything in 3-4 months time anyway.

Besides wouldn't want to interact with the scum on ebay

Then they'll be 10 core intel 14nm following suit. Heard that's why I've caps have been melting, intel has changed reference cooler in the box :)

Look forward to seeing how.much price jumps with supply and demand off Zen2 ... If your not o. The first batch of orders, guessing prices will rise fast

thanks for the feedback guys ill go with a my gut and wait it out its been dying for about 6 months but the odd full system lock up i can do with for now while gaming haha

my powersupply is also 7 years so i think a full system will be good investment really

im gonna go with AMD this time round intel price gauge is horrible

Just hold for summer time or until it dies completely

Mate a Xeon in your rig would be like going from a HDD to a ssd. For pence after your 920 sale would be the best thing since sliced bread. If you don't do it for that kind of momem then you might as well give up

I really don’t get the logic here. Rather than diagnose the actual issue which could be free/inexpensive, you would rather blindly throw money at the situation? Nothing wrong with an upgrade, but why not at least do some basic checks?

If it's the occasional lockup and the OP is okay to plod along it makes sense really. As good as x58 is, it's an aging system and switching to a more modern system would make more sense. I've still got my old x58 parts and had some great use out of it and yeah, it punches well above it's weight considering its age, average FPS in games didn't really increase much going from my x5650 at 4.4ghz to my Ryzen 2700x, but minimum frame rates increased quite dramatically and it was WELL worth the upgrade for me.

Hey,

Well, we are only 3-4 months away from the much anticipated launch, and given that you should use your new machine at least 5 years more down the line, then if you can hold, then hold and take the new platform in July.

yeah gonna wait and buy zen 2 i am gonna replace my case in next few weeks ready for when its released as currently my case is awful and the airflow is crap and power button not working etc

I fail to see how a CPU upgrade will fix his failing motherboard.

No meaningful fault finding/diagnosis has been carried out. It could be a very simple/free fix or certainly a cheap one. Something as daft as a BIOS battery, duff stick of RAM, CPU cooler fan on its way out or innapropriate BIOS/overclock settings, non of this is difficult to test for it costs anything other than time (op is now apparently doing a case swap anyway which shoots the time argument down), but apparently people don’t believe in doing even the most basic checks anymore in favour of potential Ryzen worship in a few months.
