Limbo

No meaningful fault finding/diagnosis has been carried out. It could be a very simple/free fix or certainly a cheap one. Something as daft as a BIOS battery, duff stick of RAM, CPU cooler fan on its way out or innapropriate BIOS/overclock settings, non of this is difficult to test for it costs anything other than time (op is now apparently doing a case swap anyway which shoots the time argument down), but apparently people don’t believe in doing even the most basic checks anymore in favour of potential Ryzen worship in a few months.

I fail to see where he says he has a failing motherboard?
I fail to see how you missed this bit:

WOW didn't realize i would accidentally high jack this thread but to stop Avalon being an ass and to wipe any doubt.... here we go.

@CuriousTomCat Cheers for pointing it out for those who cant read :)

Definitely not done any fault finding/testing.....

The problem:

1 slot of RAM disappears occasionally, Slot C2 to be precise. I also get "IRQ not Less than Equal" errors when it does decide to blue screen and from my understanding this is a memory issue

Fault finding:

  1. Restored the CPU voltage and removed the overclock and reset the DRAM frequency to default
  2. I have 6 sticks of 1GB corsair dominator ram of the same frequency as the 2GB sticks im using and swapped them all out for the 1GB sticks and it still happens
  3. Swapped graphics cards to my older 280x to see if it was a VRAM issue that was causing the "IRQ not Less than Equal" errors and it still happened
  4. Gave the CPU and RAM a voltage increase at "stock frequencies" and still happened
  5. Replaced the CMOS battery
  6. Reseated everything multiple times and cleaned all RAM slots with compressed air and a brush

Therfore....
  1. None of the above addressed the C2 slot vanishing occasionally
  2. Blue screens with the "IRQ not Less than Equal" error comes and goes and is either rampant for maybe a day then vanishes for a month or 6 weeks
  3. Why would I sling £40 at a 10 yr old rig when i can put it aside to go to a brand new CPU/Mobo/RAM

tekkas, had the same with my 4790k. Over the last year or two BSODs or freezing/hard lockups becoming more and more frequent. I presumed it was degredation so just kept adding voltage which seemed to work for a while then it'd happen again.

In the end I delidded it and it appeared that the paste had dried up under the IHS so much that it wasn't contacting the core anymore, all the paste was stuck to the underside on the IHS, none on the die and the die was black. Wish I'd taken a picture now but it all cleaned up like new and has been stable ever since. I think the poor contact by the dried up paste under the IHS was causing sudden momentairy temp spikes and instability.

I'm waiting for Zen2 as well and if I was you in the mean time I'd definitely grab a delid tool and put some fresh paste under the IHS, reseating the RAM wouldn't hurt either if it's not been taken out for a while.

Hey guys just a quick one really

Is it worth me holding out a few more .months for zen 2 though I hear it's due June July which is abit away im planning for a new PC as my currently on is nearly 7 years old now
A devil canyon cup which was overclocked for 3 years then started crashing so had to down clock and now I get Random full system lock ups so really think I need a new PC now....

My only concern is how long I need to wait for zen 2 or should I just get a new build now ?

Any options appreciated
Just build now ....... Most of this forum says wait for the next big thing!!! If you enjoy the games you have the budget then just build it and have fun now....

my temps seem ok but cant overclock anymore it just crashes after 20 mins or so

has yours improved since deliding ive never done it befoire

My temps were ok as well, stayed bellow 80C. The reason I say it must have been getting temp spikes is because it's been stable ever since. I think the spikes were so quick software wasn't picking them up but they were enough to lock the system up. Of course the delid has dropped temps but they were way within normal range before anyway and it had been stable at those same temps for years.

Improved how? It's now stable as I say and temps are even lower, under heavy load you'll see 15-20C drop. It's at 4.6GHz but 4.7 is probably doable now whereas before the extra voltage needed pushed the temps too high. For me I get all the benefits of the delid and it restored stability.

I suppose it's possible just reseating the CPU might of fixed the instability so maybe try that before deliding but if you can't run anything other than stock either your chip has massive degradation or the thermal paste need changing under the IHS.

I'd lean towards waiting it out. Although the prices are normalising a bit, I still just don't see much value with intel. Then again, if you can grab an 8700k/8086k/9700k at a good price, for gaming I see them being relevant for a VERY long time.

If you have a use for multi-core operations like photoshop & lightroom & video encoding, then DEFINITELY wait for Ryzen.

I built an intel right around the 8086k about 6 months ago and its great. However for productivity and value, I am also tempted to buy a second rig which is moreso Ryzen devoted.

well i swapped my case out this weekend only to find a pin was bent on the motherboard after removing the cpu, once i put the cpu back in etc its now takin 2-3 restarts and disabling renabling xMP, i bought a replacement motherboard but now i think iwill just buy a ryzen now instead

are all the boards going to be able to upgrade to the zen 2?
