Limited slip diff

It's a little piece of machinery that sits in the middle of an axle.

It's job is to distribute power properly when a vehicle is cornering.

The effect is that it improves traction.

I'd start here and read through the whole article (the various types of LSD are explained between pages 4 and 7 I think)

Basically it's a differential where torque cannot be moved entirely to one wheel.

It's worth getting, it improves traction (well, it doesn't, it allows for better use of available traction, but the end result is the same), and makes oversteer more predictable and controllable.

However there are various types available, and I've no idea what is considered the best type for the MX-5 :)

Do you mean in general for cars or are you saying there are different types of LSD for the MX5 ?

In general for cars, I've got no idea about specifically for the MX5. Different types can be less or more aggressive and intrusive in day to day driving. You can also get very different torque biasing characteristics among the same type of device depending on how they have been set up.

It's one to ask people experienced in the car what they would recommend, because LSD's are not one size fits all.

Thanks just found some interesting threads on the mx5ocforum.

i have the torsen type 2 from a 1.8s in my 1990 mx5.

it is much better than an open diff!

corners a lot better, it doesnt spin a wheel coming off round abouts anymore.

Yeah the Torsen one is the one to get so im reading.. more readily available in the MK2's it seems but I think the GF will end up with one of those anyway.

Does it come as standard on the 1.8Is?

Sure does, its one of the Major upgrades you get when buying the Is vs the I (Mk2 only).

It makes a huge diff to the Mx-5, much more interesting to drive in the wet :)

Torsen is a great diff, strong as nails and will take silly power before going bang, think the 1.6 diff is viscous which is pants.

Don't forget you also get ABS with the 1.8is that you don't get on the standard 1.8.

The combined LSD and ABS is why im looking for the 1.8is too. Nearly bought a 1.8i because there are so many out there cheaper.

ABS isn't necessarily a blessing. saying that ABS can be disabled, its much harder to add a diff :)
