Hi guys, just a few questions about the parts im looking to buy as my first pc! (that ive bought, only 17 :P)

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00GHz (Socket AM2)
Mobo - Gigabyte M750SLi-DS4 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Mem - 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-18
Gfx - OcUK GeForce 9800 GT 512MB SILENT GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) x 2
All found on, and to be bought from, the overlcockers site ofc.

Bare with me, some of these questions may be obvious but i couldnt find answers browsing about, and im not very knowledgeable with hardware.

1. How do I tell, or even, are any of these parts going to drag others down and drop performance?
2. Will all these parts be compatable together? main concern was things such as DDR2 mobo but DDR3 Gfx, comapatable?
3. I read in reviews for the Gfx cards that they are relatively big, does anyone use these cards? and able to specify dimensions so I can see if they will into my NZXT "Lexa" case as SLI?
4. Power supply, looking at the companies websites for all the parts i couldnt see how much power was needed, what sorta supply should I be buying? I only have a " X-Power GTX light 480w".
5. Last of all, you will be glad to know,
"4 x 1.8v memory slots" does that mean i need to find RAM that has a voltage of 1.8 at a maximuim? if I get 2v ram will it not work to full potential?

Thanks very much for your time, all those questions are probably second nature answers to many people who will see this. :)
Thankyou very much in advance to any answers you may be able to pass on.

Thanks for your time, and I hope I havent broken any forum rules
If so ill be happy to delete this, if an admin does not first :p

Hmmm its not easy to tell with your setup as all the components are fairly decent spec, nothing obvious stands out anyway. What sound card do you have?

graphics card dimensions can be found on the vendor's website so you can easily check.

that power supply might be enough, but with two graphics cards in there I would go for a higher rated PSU to be on the safe side.

Buy Intel.

helpful

Your build seems solid i would personaly get 2x 4850s but theres not much in it.

1. Simple answer with your build no
2. It will be fine gfx ram is totaly indapendant
3. 220x100x15 mm (the last figure is maximum thickness of the graphics card
4. It might just squeeze it but this psu would be best psu
5. Ever so slight you wont notice it but benchmarks will

I would have gone with something more like

Wow i just went to make some food and already 4 replies!
Thanks very much
one question,
is there a big difference between the intel core 2 duo e7200 wolfdale 2.53 compared to the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00GHz? other than the speed which is obvious to novices

Thanks very much again, time to check the asus radeon cards you showed :)

:)

According to CPU passmark benchmark the 7200 is 30% ish faster than the 6000+, but in real world apps, games you probably wouldn't notice that much.

Thanks mick ill look into the benchmarking
Pwn direct : great help! answered very well thank you!

Just checking i found a few articles claiming that intel focus too much on raw speed and amd is more reliable. im just really looking for a system that will play the newer games, gears pc crysis etc pretty well nearly max settings therfore would the original stated build, other than power supply, fullfil my needs?
Not able to spend a shed load my bank account is very limited around say £400 to max of £500 i guess.. need money for fable 2 and gears 2 on the 360 as well :P
Thanks very much for everyones time and comments, all are appreciated and taken into account, as I search for specs for everything mentioned

Celstial here is filled with intel fanbois jfi

Amd offer much better vaule for money than intel & all there gd for is encoding for a cheap games machine amd is "the better choice"

Now there seems to be a AMD VS INTEL
all i can say is FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
well now ive got that out : P
no matter whether you like amd or intel, is the amd proccessor i was looking at a fairly good one for just running a few games, where is th best place for me to benchmark these?
Thanks for advice :)

Intel's the king CPU wise at the moment, AMD have the graphics crown at the min.

As long as the memory isn't "value" stuff or Ballistix (these fail massively) you'll be fine.

The 9800GT is a renamed 8800GT with identical performance. You should get a 4850.

If you get an IBM Deathstar do not pass go do not collect 200 pounds.

That's an absolutely typical AMD fanboy quote. No substantiation at all.

You want to go Intel for this build, an ATi graphics card (probably the 4850) and an Asus or Gigabyte P45 motherboard. 4GB of RAM is a good idea (my rig munches 3.31gb while playing Crysis). Go for a Corsair PSU, 500-600w.

I do not know that much about CPUs atm, but I think the ati graphics cards are the way to go. Only problem is, once you buy there is always something new around the corner that makes you think, which I'd waited for a week.

However, I don't think 'real world' performance actually differs that much with current gen hardware, unless your comparing the absolute top end with the bottom end. Intel atm has the reputation.

What does make a huge difference is how many resource hogging applications you run simultaneously, or how much RAM you have. For example, with less than 4G of RAM vista chugs. My old P4Dual on vista was so slow. On ubuntu it was so fast.

Doubt this helps much. :p

AMD Athlon 64 X2 will be fine, if your not planning on overclocking. I had one and they work perfectly and are very good value for the price.

If you want to overclock, or upgrade the cpu later (to overclock more :P) then get intel.

At stock there will be no realworld diffrence apart from less money for beer :P

Thanks very much i will definetly look into the 4850, and find a crosswire mobo instead of sli .. didnt realise it was just a name changer....

but but but
i really really wanted a deathstar :(
i just love loosing all of my data, who doesnt

thanks everyone for advice and comments
