I've had sky broadband for about 2 months and all seems well speed wise. I've recently noticed that whilst playing BF3 (PC) my game jumps around like my ping has increased a lot when it actually hasn't. I'm currently using the Netgear router they supplied. Are these any good?

Do my line stats look ok?

Thanks.

This is a new build flat but Sky initially estimated 11-17Mb so was a little surprised at getting the lower end of it. I will have to test another router then I suppose.

Thanks for the reply.

Sky's target SNR is 7 dB but even at 8.5 dB with 21.5 dB attenuation it should connect at a faster speed so it's likely there is noise on the line.

You should connect the router directly to the test socket to see if it makes any difference.

The router is connected to the master socket with a filter and i am cabled directly to the router.

I assume noise on the line is out of my control?

I thought i was close to the exchange but didn't know I lived there; Sam Knows availability checker :D

You are approximately 0 metres from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

You be ok when your exchange is enabled with FTTC.:p

Could try another filter, or try a filtered faceplate instead, when I had Be, I got a whole 1.5Mb increase when using the faceplate compared to a filter dongle.

Remove the master socket faceplate & use the test socket behind with a filter & see what your speed is then.

There's a test socket behind the master socket ?

Depends what type of master socket you have. If its got a distinct top and bottom to the socket with screws in the bottom then there will be a test socket in there. Otherwise opening will just show you wiring.

You might have a noisy line or you might just have an extension hard wired in to the master socket that's adding noise to the line.

When I swap the cable back from the test socket the line attenuation upstream hits 100 dB before it disconnects and drops back to 13.9 dB. Is that normal?

The downstream "Noise Margin" has risen to 10.2dB which indicates problems with your internal wiring. Is the bell wire connected? It is the wire connected to terminal 3 on the faceplate of the master socket. If it is, remove it, then post the stats from the master socket (not the test socket).

The noise margin could be fluctuating depending on the time of day however it is strange that the downstream rate is the same regardless that the noise margin increased from 8.5 dB to 10.2 dB.

I don't know if it is possible for Sky's ADSL setup to lock at a specific downstream rate but I had a similar issue of a locked upstream a while back with BT but was told it wasn't possible regardless that I had recorded many occurrences of the same upstream rate with different noise margins by reconnecting at different times of the day. It occurred at the same time as a switch to interleaving so I requested to switch back to fast path and the upstream was unlocked again.

I suggest you ask Sky to look into it or post on their support forum and ask for a line reset or whatever it is they would do to clear all parameters.

You will achieve much more than the ~11k once the problem is resolved.

I removed the phone cable from the wall to check the wiring and got these stats. The downstream still hasnt changed but the dB decreased.

These are the wires i have connected:

You want me to remove the orange cable in 3?

Remove the orange wire and post the stats again.

By the way, the reason the sync speed is the same is because the DLM that Sky uses has capped you. Once the downstream noise margin is as high as it can be, you can call Sky and get your line uncapped which will result in better speeds.

I removed the orange cable. The internet stayed disconnected until i put the bottom half of the master socket back on. What does the orange cable do?
