Don't think the OP will be bothered about that level of detail just yet. Getting the CD sorted is probably higher on his list of priorities ;)
 
Use Wubi, you don't need to burn ISO's or anything, it will install everything from within your Windows environment using an MSI installer.
 
ok, i think ive screwed up somewhere lol. I have read everything here and i am now more confused than when i opened the thread lol.
Anyway heres where i'm upto. I downloaded ubuntu 7.10 from a link given on this link. I then got a blank cd and just burnt the file (with all the contents inside) onto it. That didn't work. So i thought, damn i need to just burn the contents and not the file, so another blank disc (CD-R so couldn't re-use them) and burnt the contents, didn't work. I've changed boot priorities and which cd drive i boot it from, nothing works.
So 2 wasted blank discs later i'm no closer to getting linux :(

also, i know it sounds stupid, but could you explain it in an easy to follow way (not too much jargon please, thanks)
 
Not to be rude or anything, but if you're struggling to burn a CD image properly then even with Ubuntu you'll seem lost in Linux.

So your suggesting i give up now and never learn how to use linux. You could say i should read about it on ther internet first but i'm a kinestetic learner (did about it in school last year) which means i learn better when i'm practically doing it not reading and listening etc.
There's a first time for everything mate, i'm sure you wern't born with vast knowledge of computers etc.
 
Someone already told you how to burn the ISO using imGburn. It's one thing to be a practical learner, but if you can't follow basic instructions you will never learn anything.

I am sure I have been in other threads of yours where you have failed to follow instructions...
 
right then, i've got imgburn.
I now have another problem though :(
When i right-click on the .iso file there is no option to create an .iso image
So i try and get the file from inside the program. I open the program, click add file, here's the problem. It won't let me accept that that is the file i want to burn it just keeps opening the file and sub-folders etc until there is nothing more to open, it won't let me burn anything

You need to tell it which drive to boot first. You can permanently set the lineup in the BIOS (many people go FDD -> ODD -> HDD) or you can temporarily choose a boot volume by pressing a key at boot. It varies by mobo but F12 seems to be the most popular. Read your boot screen, I bet it lists it.
 
i can't change the HDD boot in the boot priorities, only my CD-RW, DVD-drive and floppy drive.
I will go try the f12 thing now.

Don't just blindly try F12, read the boot screen and see which button it wants you to push. ;)

It's essentially the same thing you'd do if you wanted to boot a Windows install disk.
 
if you mean to get into the BIOS then i have to press del (delete, obviously lol). The only other option is to see the BIOS post message screen (shows system spec and other stuff), i press TAB for that
 
Lol Dj Jester, saving us all a lot of hassle here... If you can't boot or burn a CD though i really fear you'll have a hard time with the minimal amount of messing around you may have to do with any of the classic linux installs...
 
i have wubi dj jester, but i'd like to do it through the cd.
I have burnt the iso file onto it and the cd boots. I click 'start or install ubuntu', then it comes up with a box that says 'loading linux kernel' (or something along those lines), then it goes to a load-up bar (like windows), it's after the load-up bar that i get a problem. When the load-up bar has fully loaded and dissapeared a blank screen with a flashing white line appears for a few seconds then a little blue dialouge box comes up in the middle of the screen saying 'Attention out of range H- 75.5khz V- (can't remember)'
I have messed with all the options in the F4 menu (at the main screen, the first thing you see when the cd boot's) but nothing is working.
What should i do?

That's due to your monitor, for some reason it's not able to display whatever resolution Ubuntu uses. Weird though, as it's meant to be pretty compatible (since you configure your ideal resolution more suited to your monitor after it's installed, like Windows).

What make is your monitor?
 
it's a fairly old ADC
CRT monitor

i'm not sure why there's a problem though because i'm running windows at 1024x768 in 32bit
It did say H- 75.5khz but at this moment it's running at 60.0khz. Is there a way around this?
