Hi.

I'm just setting up a LinkedIn account, and it came up with a box to search my Google Mail and add contacts, so I've found a lot of contacts I could add, but what I am wanting to know is, like Facebook, you add anyone you know, is it the same with LinkedIn, anyone you know you just add, even if they're in a totally different career?

I know it sounds like a stupid question but I'm aware LinkedIn is more professional than Facebook.

Thanks.

Yes, you can add anyone you want. As you say it is more professional than FB, but you can add anyone you know. It expands your network and just connects you to more people that way. Doesn't matter what they do or you do for a job.

I haven't added anyone to mine that isn't a work related contact that would be handy to keep in touch with for future work opputunities.

A colleague 3 weeks ago had an issue where the person who he wanted to interview with was on the same linkedin list as his current boss. I don't use or like linkedin so I don't know how this works but apparently it was ~~~ !drama! ~~~

I have other, better stories :O

LinkedIn tries to deter you from getting linked to people that you don't know or have no connection (work, friend etc) with. When you try to link to someone it asks how you know them. I can't imagine that this security is particularly rigorous against, say, lying. I've had link from all sorts of people I don't know. Some I think come from being in the same Groups, which is also an acceptance choice.

And people who aren't logged in can see your education and work history. You might not want to have that information turning up on Google.

LinkedIn is a total waste of time unless you're a contractor or work in an industry where people are head-hunted. I deleted my account after realising I had no use for it beyond being nosey; I presumed that most of my former contacts also used it for the same.

Linkedin should your professional worth based on your network. Try not to connect to anyone you'd rather not be assosiated with professionally. How high you set the bar is up to you, mines is fairly low, but doesn't include people who I don't have any knowledge of work wise.

I guess it depends what industry you're in as you say, from my personal experience I've had a few recruiters contact me via LinkedIn in relation to jobs so I'm in no hurry to ditch it.

I got my current job via a head hunter on Linkedin, but definitely agree that it can be a waste of time depending what industry you're in.
