Linksys by Cisco WRT54GL 54Mbps Open Source Wireless G Cable Router

NW-052-LS_400.jpg

The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (54Mbps) and Wireless-B (11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

The WRT54GL Wireless Router’s open source code enables router customisation to create firmware for specialised applications or increased throughput. Linux developers and technical enthusiasts can tweak the source code to build in support for applications, either to add extra functionality previously unavailable or prioritise traffic to improve throughput to a given application.

- All-in-one Internet-sharing Router, 4-port Switch, and 54Mbps Wireless-G (802.11g) Access Point
- Shares a single Internet connection and other resources with Ethernet wired and Wireless-G and -B devices
- Push button setup feature makes wireless configuration secure and simple
- High security: TKIP and AES encryption, wireless MAC address filtering, powerful SPI firewall

My faithful WRT54G seems to be flaky lately so I picked one of these up, will install tomato when I get in and see if its superior to my old one :)

as above mate, afraid not :(

I'd happily pay £100 for a gigabit router with tomato support

don't really care about the wireless so much, nobody uses wireless for data transfer anyway, just light browsing etc

The WRT160NL and an HP Procurve 1400-8G isn't far off £100. Sure, it's two boxes, but it's GigE, wireless-N and you've got the likes of DD-WRT on the router.

Would that combo beat say my DIR655?

I do miss my GL running Tomato so something like that even if it's a 2 box solution would be fine with me (and make the lounge look more techy :p).

Well, with Wireless N enabled for example the throughput gets flaky at times especially when multiple connections are active (torrents etc) for both wireless and wired clients.

Turn it on to G mode only though and everything is superb.

I did some research and the Atheros wireless chip used on the DIR-655 is known for its various issues which the 865 resolves by use of the Realtek chipset but of course that costs a lot more :p

I can live without wireless N for now and make do with gigabit but once I get a HD playback capable netbook N will be essential.

I guess I could get an N access point and bung it into one of the 655's gigabit ports though and that would just work? I can then disable wireless on the 655 so it's only acting as a wired router.

Hmm that would be cheaper too!

Provided the router does all the features that, for example, DD-WRT does a wireless AP would fix flaky wireless.

My WRT54GS v1.1 seems to be dead and a WRT610N that wasn't lobotomised (DD-WRT seem to have a partly working build that runs and Sveasoft claim compatibility) would be an ideal replacement. GigE, storage link, N-wireless, ~£100.

Edit: £100 ex vat  - ~£120, or £143.74 :(

Sat for about 3 hours trying to get my new router configured and just couldn't get any sort of internet connectivity....I go down stairs and notice the TV isn't working.....god damn virgin media had a problem on their end so I was thinking it was user error installing my router......

Most annoying, hopefully tonight i will get tomato downloaded and get this thing working.

so your old router is probably fine.. :o

remember to do the 'erase nv ram' thing from

administration, configuration

after installing tomato, to clear out any old ghosts in the machine

personally I'm using a WRT54GS with Tomato, and a 5 port gigabit switch, I'd just prefer an all in one solution. Tomato + gigabit is my goal

Never setup a network before, wired or wireless.
