The reasons for this are well documented, but if you work with Linux in computer forensics, surely typing "sudo passwd root" into a terminal can't be that much of a challenge?
I think it was 256MB, but it will still probably work with lower. You just wouldn't necessarily want to, since it's not meant to be a distro aimed at old, lower specced machines. It's a fully featured distro to compete with the likes of Ubuntu and OpenSUSE.
