Hi, This has probably been posted many times but basically what are your linux must have's, I want to try divx converting and utilising the dual core on my rig.

Also will the below rig be o.k. for it

DFI Lanparty motherboard
ATI X800pro
2 x Western Digital Raptors (RAID 0)

Anyway what do you reckon?

depends on what you want to do with linux, most things for linux are free, try looking aroud sourceforge.net and freshmeat.net,

my personal must haves for linux are:

yum
ssh
nano (can't stand vi although can use it)

Yeah, that's the trick with Linux. A lot of really great software ships with most distros and most all software for the program is free (in both ways, as I assume your thread title intends).

Software that is highly useful to me:
  • The GIMP
  • vim
  • mt-daapd (iTunes file sharing daemon)
  • Firefox
  • Apache
  • GNOME
  • Audacity (Free audio editor/encoder)
  • WINE

There are probable dozens more that I'm forgetting.

There's a lesson here and it's "be less vauge", one mans "must have" apps are another mans wasted hard disk space (ie, how many people need 3 browsers ?).

Better to ask about must have apps of a certian type :p

Yeah you can, you need a 64bit kernel with smp enabled and software that takes advantage of 64bit capability. No idea what suse 10.1 has as default (likely to be 32bit non smp) but you can recompile the kernel to support these if it does not.

O.k. ive download suse 10.1 64 bit version and installed it, All installs fine but when it restarts it says it has a boot problem, I am using SATA drive could that be it, I would have thought if it see's the drive to install it then why not boot from it?

Please help, i really want to give linux a try but its not looking good at the moment.

Nah its not that straight forward.. You using grub or lilo bootloader? What is the exact error message? 90% of the time if you google the error message other people will have the same problems and have solutions.

dnsmasq - DNS Forwarder/DHCP when behind a router for small networks (less than 5 PCs).

Clamav - Anti-Virus for Linux. I use it to scan my Samba share, which I access from my WinXP box.

If you are running a destop flavour of Linux then I guess decss is essential for DVD playing.

Yippee, Now on suse 10.1, Looks and feel pretty nice, how can i tell if it is using the 64bit processor porperly?

uname -a Should tell you if your kernel supports 64bit I think (not had 64bit before). cat /proc/cpuinfo to see some info on your cpu.

Cool, So now i need to take advantage of it, What programs are there to take advantage of both 64bit and dual processing?

Also the graphics seems a bit slow on 3d, I have an X800Pro PCI-Express card in it

Thanks
