Linux - My Thoughts

Yeah, I was thinking that, but it's on the blog of someone else. I could claim I didn't know anything about it. :p

I doubt it will get anywhere on "Digg" anyway, it isn't exactly the most amazing piece of writing ever. :p

We'll see, hasn't been much Ubuntu stuff on recently so they can't use that as an excuse, anyhow, I thought it was good, and accurate, so far anyway, still got some to read. Made a comment in the Digg post, and ofc gave it a Digg. :)


Most likely that comment will last 5 minutes before it goes into the eternal damnation that is a buried comment though.
 
I am using Ubuntu 7.04 and tbh there are only three slighty annoying things.

1) Can't figure out how to install flash player on Opera (dislike firefox)

2) Can't get wma files to play even with the added codecs or on vlc

3) Can't see to find how to install a spellchecker on opera either
Ah well.

Isn't there a pop-up in Opera when trying to view flash, that then takes you to the flash site, which in turn gives instructions? Unless you're on the 64 bit version that is.

Tried Mplayer for the WMA's?

Not sure on the spellchecker.

Yes it takes me to the adobe site however the player does not support the opera browser.

Will try Mplayer now

I was just using a fresh install of Ubuntu when I decided that Linux was really a viable option for people. My Dad had just asked me to teach him how to use "this Ubuntu thing", and he seemed to just pick it up without any issues. It seemed strange that an operating system is still considered to be for experts only when really it is accessible to anyone, and with very little help someone can learn how to use it.

Tell me about it, I stuck it on my Mum's pc. She soon learnt where the Opera button was, then the bookmarks button, then finally the shutdown button. :p

1) download flashplayer. You should be able to unpack it. Put the files in the Opera plugin directory - Tools-Preferences-Advanced tab-Content-Plugin options to find address, prob /usr/lib/opera/plugins. Click find new plugins in above pref page or restart. It does crash occasionally but copes with most things.

3) Opera should use the default spellcheck. However, it doesn't run as you type. Right click in a form ie reply box, and there should be a spellcheck entry. If you use the email client then you get a spellcheck button on the compose/reply screen.
