ummmm.... any one would suggets anything fun to do on linux systems? i usually play games on windows..... but on linux i dono what to do.... i just install it look around it and thats it.... i go back on windows and never acess it again XD

what you do for fun on linux? any recommended free games? any neat little fun tricks e.g customising desktop?

Oh my god... I really cannot believe I just read this?

Ok, first of all... neat little fun tricks.... Customising the desktop you say?

Ok, check out BERYL.

Better still, have a look at somehting like youtube for beryl desktops and just think why Vista looks so tacky in comparison.

Imagine closing windows and instead of them vanishing, they burst into flames, or spin into the abyss or even just fold into obscurity.

imagine, rather than just having multiple desktops, that you click on to chose the desktop, you can have thjem all on the desktop all at the same time, and you have them transparent and oyu cycle through them rather like vistas ( Hey, I stole this from Linux ) aero scrolly thingy or maybe on a rotating 3D transparent-cube perhaps?

The visuals of Linux when run under Beryl or such like, kind of make Vista look a bit like Windows 3.1

So, there is a starter.

Great list GarethDW

I myself toyed with a few games, UT2003 and UT2004 were the ones I had on my Linux box and at the time they, or rather 2004 was the only game I played that much.

I have run a surprising number of games under WINE, but again, thats defeating the object of having Linux in many ways.

There are a few other alternatives such as CEDEGA that need working, but they are there.

Beryl is no longer updated, beryl and compiz (To seperate set of people) Merged together so you should now look out for compiz-fusion, provides the same effects.

If you install a distro like fedora or ubuntu the latest versions come with compiz-fusion already installed.

But i must admit if you only play games then linux may not be for you, i use it for everything since im not a massive gamer and its a lot nicer to program in over ssh.

erm i aint actually been experimenting much been busy with stuff :P i get round to it though :D

qoute from beryl:
written in C

0.0 i learnt c in uni but i dought i learnt everything to know about it... may be i can do something with c on it :P

Games and 3D desktop acceleration usually doesn't mix. I'm running compiz-fusion atm, and I can say I played Tremulous without too many problems. However some games will not run at all. But you can easily disable 3D acceleration by just changing a couple of files and restarting X.

BTW AA is up to version 2.8.2 Linux support ended a LONG time ago. Some games (windows) work under Wine.

What did you make in C at uni?

erm well we didn't learn much.... we only covered basics like printing and functions and arrays and pointers. but i think theres more cuase i only got through 3rd of the book so i guess i can finish it off and may do something on linux :P

and dude how do u install something on linux!! i cant find a install file or somthing on the dam site!!! =.=

Installing things in linux is different to windows and each distro has it's own "package manager" - Fedora will be rpm based, but if you google "fedora package manager" it'll tell you exactly how to do it :)

what is Fedora 0.0 i wanted to install beryl

and DUDE where is the thing to enable cube effect on 7.10!!! i cant find it....

Did you install the Compiz configuration panel as mentioned in your other thread? It has controls to enable and tweak dozens of Compiz features, one of which is the cube. :-)

Fedora is another distribution. Specifically it's the free testing side of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. If you've got Ubuntu installed and working it'd probably be easier to stick with it. You can do pretty much the same things on both. Check out some of the screenshots and see if you like the look.

EDIT: Beryl has been merged with its former competitor, Compiz. Together they form Compiz Fusion which is installed by default in Ubuntu 7.10.

From the 7.10 I'm going to assume you are running Ubuntu rather than Fedora. If so, it comes with compiz-fusion (basically beryl) already running but does not has the config tool so it requires that to be installed before you can change anything. What graphics driver are you running on currently?

Got to butt-in here, but I tried Beryl a short while back on Mandrake with a 7300GT and it was nice and ha ha, but I only tried it out...

At this time, Im using SuSE 10 and as of the day before yesterday I upped to 10.3

I have followed Il-instructionez to the letter and its trashed itself twice now, forcing more work to recover my stuff all the time.

What is the most simple way for me to have a compiz-fusion desktoip setup, and what O/S do you suggest?

Im nto too hot with Debian based distros and I really dont know why? - perhaps cos I started Linux with Mandrake I dotn know, but I seem to associate DEB based distros with Gnome and RPMS with KDE and I hate Gnome.

KUBUNTU? - Last time I played with it, it failed to work. Somehting that is happening all too often these days is Linux distros not working, while others do?

Anyway, sorry to butt in but what do you lot suggest I try out?

Kubuntu seems like it's worth a shot. Compiz Fusion comes pre-installed and it's pretty popular so you should be able to get good support. You might have a look at Fedora 8 too, though I think it's a bit too rough around the edges.

Once you get the hang of it .deb > * in my opinion. It's better than yum at least. :p

For it just to work, you're going to have to try Kubuntu again! I'm on the other side, I can't stand KDE, Gnome is more intuitive to me. Saying that, I've evolved from Ubuntu to Arch with Fluxbox, very quick. But no Compiz-Fusion.

Give the latest Kubuntu 7.10 a try, there's plenty of help here if you need it. Synaptic is good, just not as good as pacman :p

What happens when you open up a terminal and type
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Regarding the video drivers, what do you get when you type
glxinfo
Look for where it mentions direct rendering and see if it says yes or no.
