just to go back a step... Are you sure you have upgraded the firmware?

from another forum said:
To do the above I
Downloaded the firmware script by itself:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kerne...rmware;hb=HEAD

And then Save Page As

"get_dvb_firmware" - without quotes

Change directory (cd) to the folder where you saved it

Now in terminal use

perl get_dvb_firmware tda10046

Copy the resulting file ( dvb-fe-tda10046.fw ) to /lib/firmware

sudo cp dvb-fe-tda10046.fw /lib/firmware

that is how I did it

root:/lib/firmware

ls

dvb-fe-tda10046.fw
dvb-fe-xc5000-1.6.114.fw
dvb-usb-dib0700-1.20.fw

As you can see the firmware is in that directory
but so are two other dvb ones

so what do you think I should do?

what is your other TV card?

I really don't get it when I searched on the web other people have got my HVR 1100 Haupague working on ubuntu but I don't get how they did that.

Still a learning curve for me though.

Hauppage HVR-3000 I got this working months ago, even BBC HD but the picture was a little rubbish compared to windows.

I'm doing my teacher training so can't waste weeks trying to force it to work.

Although Windows 7 is being a pig about dual tuners atm.

root@parm-desktop:~# dmesg | grep fw
[ 6.514515] ohci1394: fw-host0: OHCI-1394 1.0 (PCI): IRQ=[16] MMIO=[febfe000-febfe7ff] Max Packet=[2048] IR/IT contexts=[8/8]

so what does that show u?

shall I remove the two other dvb files to another location?

and even work out how to change channels within vlc

parm@parm-desktop:~$ dmesg | grep fw
[ 6.514515] ohci1394: fw-host0: OHCI-1394 1.0 (PCI): IRQ=[16] MMIO=[febfe000-febfe7ff] Max Packet=[2048] IR/IT contexts=[8/8]

I've just removed the two other firmware files but in meTV I still get a signal reading of 36%

does the above command mean no firmware is being used?

I think its my HVR-3000, all of my three tuners tuner perfectly on their own. As soon as I pair them up with the HVR-3000 I get no signal. Proper getting annoyed now.

Need to try avermeda 777 with my Videomate T220, doesn't really help because I need the haupage for BBC-HD and ITV-HD. May just buy a Freesat HD box if the non HD tuners work together. Don't have time to waste to get this working.

sorry that's not much use. ... I thought it may have mentioned specifically the firmware used. Have you restarted your pc since?

try searching for dvb or any info on the card reported by dmesg.

according to the link i posted earlier the line

kernel: tda1004x: found firmware revision 20 -- ok

wil indicate the firmware has loaded..

thanks will try this out myself

don't think I did a full system reboot just killed xserver and tried it like that

I'm probably going to install windows 7 tonight too if I get a chance
just to prove my theory that it is not the signal from the aireal it is the OS!

I know when I changed the firmware on my Nova T 500 the system didn't pcik it up until I did a cold boot. Shutdown the PC, remove power cable and wait 10 minutes, then restart. I think it has something to do with the new firmware being ignored because there is a firmware in place that doesn't get wiped on a restart.

Egg on my face!

I moved the HTPC into the lounge and fed one TV card the ariel from the lounge, I got a second massive TV cable so I could feed the second card from the point in the conservatory, bing! both tuners working!

The problem must be my TV splitter adapter.

Apologies.

yep just as I thought on a reboot mytv still shows a signal of 36%

I have got the right firmware this time

any idea how I can work out if that firmware is actually being used?

I'm back after lots of pain and endurance I think i know why I got this problem.

It seems that the on board amplifier is too strong for my signal.
Basically (never thought I would say this) but my signal is too strong for the on board amplifier.

when I take out the cable slightly from my wall socket the signal gets stronger I can see the signal go from 36% to 100% on meTV software.

I've worked out two ways around this.

1. Find a firmware that will make the amplier on board to be weaker/stronger.

2. turn off my 5 way amplifier ( but then my tv in living room would suffer) yet to try this one

3. get this adapter that sits between my wall socket and cable one of those adapters that weakens the signal - had one of these ages ago

for step 1 I tried this from another place:

>i'm not sure if your card has an onboard signal amplifier, if you find you cannot pick up any channels when you scan it could be worth trying it:

wget http://www.wi-bw.tfh-wildau.de/~pboettch/home/linux-dvb-firmware/dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options
>(then add the line)
options dvb-usb-dib0700 force_lna_activation=1

sudo modprobe dvb-usb-dib0700

****

>reboot then:

dmesg | grep dvb

After all of that I got this
parm@parm-desktop:~$ dmesg | grep dvb
[ 14.709570] cx88/2: cx2388x dvb driver version 0.0.7 loaded
[ 14.709572] cx88/2: registering cx8802 driver, type: dvb access: shared
[ 135.153402] usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_dib0700

so it looks like it did find that firmware and use it but to no avail

hope this helps someone in the future :)

this all backs up my windows 7 no trouble where the signal is perfect.
someone out there who made the firmware for "out of the box" ubuntu made a serious error on the drivers
I'm going to try out my ways

okay step 2 was interesting:

after turning off my amplifier
all the signal was lost
YET

in meTV

I see 50% signal to noise ratio
100% signal strength

mmm what does that mean? step 2 does not solve it

1 or 3 now

I can try 3 if I can find the damn module I had it YEARS ago
