hi all
i posted this here because i think the problem is i dont know how to use linux.
i have bought my daughter a hp mini note pc and a tenda w54a wireless ap to plug into my wired router to send out the wireless signal. the hp detects and connects to the tenda but i still cant connect to the internet. if it was windows i think i could sort it but the instructions for the tenda are not for linux so i cant find the settings i need to change etc.
i think i may need to get someone to set it up although i can normally do these things myself.

is there a simple setup procedure or is it a job for someone up on linux?
thanks
ashley

thanks for your reply.
i have no idea because i cant login to the wireless ap to see the settings.
i think its a problem with the linux pc as i can use my mobile phone to connect to the wireless network and access the internet.
im off out now so i will have another go when i get home later.
thanks ashley

ok ive had another go but still no luck, ill try and explain what ive done and maybe someone will see whats wrong.

on the netbbok i click on "configure nework cards"
i get 2 options
network setup options
1 user controlled with network manager
2 traditional method with ifup

i dont know the difference and they both seem the same to me.

so i select option 1 and then click to edit the network card

there are 3 options there
1 none address setup
2 automaticaddress setup (via dhcp)
3 static address setup

ive tried them all but i think its option 3 i need so i can set the ip address.
im not sure what address to put but have tried a few i.e. 192.168.0.3 or 192.168.1.3.
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

how do i know what ip address to give it?
there are 3 tabs to click below this
1 hostname and name server
2 routing
3 advanced

do i have to click routing and put something into default gateway?
do i tick "enable ip forwarding" ?

in the instructions it says to open ie and put 192.168.0.254 in the address bar to access the configuration interface but this dosent work.

i think this is where the problem is, on the taskbar it says "connected to tundra 100%" but still cant open any web pages

please help.
ashley

thanks

ive tried a few things which might help
i have pluged the mini pc straight into my 5 port wired modem router, it connects to it but i still canot acces web pages,
then i connected to a neighbours unprotected wireless network and i was able to access the web.

so im thinking this is a problem with my modem router.

i have a pc (this one) and a ps3 connected to it with no problems.

i can configure my router using ie but am not sure what i need to do to fix this problem, is it a firewall problem do you think?

thanks for your help

skiba

sorry but i dont really understand how to do that, im a bit thick when it comes to networks etc. just very basic stuff.

i could do the ping thing but dont know how to in linux, is there a dos thingy anywhere?

pinged router, fine
pinged google, fine

then done nslookup anyway and this is what came up....

server: 192.168.1.1
address: 192.168.1.1#53

non authoritative answer :
103.91.249.66 in-addr.arpa name = ik-in-f103.google.com
authritative answers can be found from:

by the way, when i ping it just keeps doing it again and again, i have to close it and restart the app, is that right?

thanks ashley

when i try to connect to google.com it just does nothing for a few minuits the says
"the connection has timed out
the server at www.google.com is taking too long to respond"
yes i can access the router login page, even with it going through the ap.
im using firefox
not sure about trying another one, and if that was the problem then why would it work through my neighbours network?

thanks for this skiba, i think we are getting there

its suse linux
with it connected via my neighbours network i can connect to GAIM although once it is connected and logged in it just disappears,
on my network nothing happens when i try to connect.

i can still ping google
i can connect to the internet through my wireless using my mobile phone.

could there be a setting on my router that needs changing?

ihave downloaded ff3 on my pc and transfered it to the mini pc with a memory card, i cant work out how to install it though.

no i havent, i could borrow my mates laptop tommorow and try that.
i havent tried connecting my ps3 wirelessly yet, is it worth trying that?.
it connects ok wired so i think it will work ok as i dont think the wireless is the problem.

this is doing my head in.
cheap hp mini on a well know auction site soon....

edit. i have tried my ps3 through wireless and it works fine..

it went to google page !!!!!
but thats as far as it would go, search didnt work neither did any links on that page.

whats up with it?

bigglespip.
problem is i cant seem to access the ap`s setup page. im putting 192.168.0.254 into firefox address bar but nothing happens. i have no problem accessing my routers setup page even through the wireless connection.

deadite66
i tried that on both pc`s and both said not recognised or similar?

thanks

thanks leezer.
i have tried that but it asks for password then says command not found.
is this right...
sudo*space*nano*space*/etc/modprobe.conf

hi skiba.
i tried those 2 lines but it says permission denied
i thought maybe i need to be logged in as admin but there is only 1 account setup i think, well i cant see any others available to login with.

leezer.
whats distro? you mean the linux version? i dont know how to find out.

its suse linux enterprise desktop 10

it didnt ask for a password. so this made me think that there was 2 users and i was using the wrong one. my daughter had tried to change the password but it seems she has just added one because at times either one are required. so anyway i thought id try and get rid of the new user so i disabled login for that user. restarted and now i cant login because the only user name i know wont work. please tell me there is a way around this, then i will go sit in the corner with the stoopid hat on for an hour:o

edit. should i try system recovery?

edit holding f11 dosent seem to do anything

ok ive logged in
done some searches on google and read something about root user, so i put root as username and used the original password and in it went.
so is "root" the administrator username? is that what i should login with when trying the above command lines?

i will try them again and see if they work now.

skibba

when i enter these in xterm
sudo echo "alias ipv6 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf
sudo echo "alias net-pf-10 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf

loged in as "root" after hitting return the prompt comes up ready for the next input.

logged in as the other user it says permission denied.

so does that mean that as root it has worked as no error message was displayed?

btw it still wont open web pages

i have just found another neighbour with unprotected network, i can use that with no problem aswell.
i may be wrong but i really think the problem is my modem/router blocking something, although it works fine if i connect my ps3 or phone wirelessly to it via the ap.
it just seems like a compatibility issue between the 2.

ok the cat one
begin info
modified by: network manager
process: /usr/bin/networkmanager
process_id: 2574
end info

name server 192.168.1.1

the netstat one

kernal ip routing table

destination gateway genmask flag mss window irtt iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 u 0 0 0 eth1
127.0.0.0 .0.0.0.0. 255.0.0.0 u 0 0 0 lo
0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 ug 0 0 0 eth1

wish i could have copied and pasted that.
edit.. it has left out the spaces but you know what it should look like

edit 2 just tryed it connected to neighbours and exactly the same

the nameserver line didnt do anything
i think the next 2 were supposed to go into something that came up after the 1st line but i did it anyway in terminal.

the down command said

network interface is managed from networkmanager
networkmanager cannot be advised to take down an interface
setup another interface instead

the up command said

network interface is managed from networkmanager
networkmanager will be advised to set up eth1
but it cannot be assured from here

then i did cat resolv
it said "208.67.222.222

then i tried internet. OMG IT WORKS
huge thanks to skiba and everyone who helped out, i was begining to think it would never work. ive also learnt a lot along the way.
THANKS GUYS :D
i still have a problem getting GAIM to work.(its what my daughter will be using a lot on it. i have put her login details for msn but it wont connect still. through the neighbours network it will connect but just disapears 2 seconds later. is there a better program i should be using?
thanks
