Based on what? The console hasn't been released yet, so how is it a lost cause?
I'm not saying the console is a lost cause, just the arguments DD (and El) decide to create, are over lost causes.
e.g. It has been stated that the PS3 will have similar operational levels to the 360, someone will always come in and say "You are Bashing the PS3 and anyway it will be loads better than the 360". Yet the evidence provided suggests otherwise.
I am not saying the PS3 is a POS, but I have my reservations. I personally believe I have a good understanding of the console market and a good idea ahead of time on what will do well. an example of this is the dreamcast. Everyone around me was telling me that it was going to be the best console of the generation. I said I was going to wait for the PS2. When asked why I was not waiting for the Xbox, I said I felt the PS2 would have a better share of the market and would dominate the Xbox. So I would get the PS2 and wait and see with the Xbox. Which I did. (I think I got a GC before the Xbox tbh.)

Most people, if you look at a consensus of this board (people that spend extortionate amounts of money on their computers) most people feel it is overpriced. If most people agree that the console is above there spending ability then it is outside the market.

...and yet a large number of the major movie houses have backed the format... unproven doesn't mean that it won't succeed.
I previously thought that BR would be the winner this time, check back in the history of the forums and you will see I was originally backing BR and thought HDDVD would not make it. I have now changed my mind, after hearing recent reports including technical specs and estimated dates of release. TBH I do not expect either to do particularly well, with DVD's still being the dominant force in the market. Look at SACDs they are technically superior to CDs and yet they are not selling as well (this could be down to marketing). MD was by far superior to tape, again it did not sell well.
Sometimes its best to see what the market wants, not what you want to sell to the market.

Granted, but we have to remember that bad news tends to be communicated at a much greater rate than good news. Everyone like to see the 'Tall Poppy' hacked down, hence the term "Tall Poppy Syndrome" (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tall_poppy_syndrome). Correct, you aren't to blame for passing on the bad news, but some responsibility for taking (or not) the news as gospel is perhaps needed. The media like to kick when you're down and in my opinion we should try to be a little more open minded...
Personally I could not give a damn about who is "Tall Poppy". I want good value for my money, I do not want to feel mislead or lied to.
I have no one good reason to buy a PS3 and certainly do not have lots of reasons for wanting one. Products like the PS2 MD player PSP have all offered me something I want. The PS2 and MD totally met my needs the PSP has left me disappointed thus far. I suspect if I bought a PS3 on release I would be bitterly disappointed and steer clear of Sony permanently.
I will wait and see with the PS3 and when the price is right I will buy one, if it proves successful. But unlike with all of its previous consoles I am wary of Sony's ability to capture the market.
It is my opinion that they have made one too many mistakes in this generation of console and have taken their consumers for granted, and then taken the Mickey. Especially in the PR department. Nintendo IMO did this with the N64 and have paid the price of having to give up its share of the market to Sony. Sega made similar mistakes with the Saturn and the Dreamcast. They lost their share of the console market all together.
I worry the same may happen to Sony, and whilst at the minute I would not be too bothered, I know full well it will be a devastating blow to the industry.
Sure there will always be new console makers vying to enter the market, but I think we need a powerhouse such as Sony to keep MS in check, and Nintendo innovative.
So if it comes across that I am anti-Sony and anti-PS3, it is because I feel let down by this company. If the PS3 is as good as I think we all hope it will be then that is great. As I have said many times, I will buy one when it is affordable. However if it is no better than the 360 or does not have the games that interest me, then I will wait until it is under £150 before considering it.
