Little Upgrade...?

The FX8320 is going to be a fair amount better than most of the others mentioned so far.

£30 for mobo / ram gives you more to spend on CPU.
that would be my thoughts. £30 for the mobo and ram £119.99 for the FX 8320 and you're on budget minus the p&p

you would be well pleased with an FX8320 and the board will take it so you're on to a winner.

If you have the board and ram for 30. Then the 8320 is a great choice although I would personally say the 4300 or 6300 now to save money and get a cheap ass for your os.. Then you will have a great system for track mania as you stated.

yeah i will be getting the board and ram for £30 which has saved me some ££ but i am unsure on which CPU to go for?

FX4300
or
FX6300

I am thinking the FX4300 as i am only playing on Trackmania 2 as my main game!

So my rig will be

Gigabyte 78lmt-usb3 motherboard
8GB ram
FX4300 3.80GHZ
GTX 660 1.5GB
60GB SSD (Been offered this for £20 that good price? OCZ Agility)
600W PSU
and 400GB Storage
In Antec 300 case

Another List (A local shop has price me these parts up)

FX-4300 3.80ghz cpu
MSI Gaming 3 motherboard
Kingston Savage Hyper X RAM 2400mhz

at a price of £168.93 but will only be £83.93 cash as he will take my old motherboard etc as trade in and will get £85 for that! i dont know which to go for ?

the 6300 would run at 4.1Ghz on turbo compared to the 4300 only having 3.9Ghz

personally I would go for the 6300 I know you say you only play Trackmania 2 but things could change. plus the 6300 will be a better multi tasker

either way it will be a much better machine to use.
the ssd for £20 is fine. put youre OS on there and youll boot up quick. you wont have lots of space for programs or games. but you can set up an install folder in your slave drive for this.

Would that 0.2ghz make a massive difference though ? (sorry if i sound stupid)

Would i really benefit for that extra £22 i know it's not a lot but i really am on a budget at the minute lol

As for the ssd that's what i plan on doing and i have 400GB hdd for storage until i get a 1TB at a lter date.

Thanks for all your replys and sorry if i sound daft.

My rig ran a 6300 for 3 years playing many top titles like battlefield 3 and 4 and even gta v and the late battlefront beta. Was a brill chip and was seated in the asus mobo I mentioned. Now I have an 8370 and in gaming isn't much different but video editing is better.

On the other hand the 4300 is currently in my brothers rig and gives very similar performance to what I was getting although he had to dial down graphics settings a little but that was due to him having a smaller gpu card.

So in all honesty for your situation either 4300 or 6300 is fine for you and either would offer a significant boost in performance. Also the ssd would help greatly if you install windows onto that.

Make sure whichever way you choose you aim for 8gb of ram as that is kind of sweet spot for gaming.

This kind of rig will certainly entertain you for a while and does provide some upgrade paths.

One other thing though bear in mind the 6300 isn't only 0.2ghz faster it has 2 more cores and is better binned silicon so will overclock better and yield more performance gains and will be more multitask friendly.

I had the fx6350 before I got the 8350
My 6350 was a great chip and is still going strong in my sisters machine. I used it hard and had it playing plenty of games and it never gave me any problems.

My 8350 has been RMA'd back to AMD and is on route back to me Im looking forward to it coming back. still in 2 minds what to use in my main machine.. 4690k or the 8350....

The 4690k is a superior cpu to the 8350. If you have the option go with it. Whilst in real world terms it's not too far apart as some people will lead you to believe it will offer a more stable fps with high end gpu compared to amds offerings. The amds just can't handle the overhead and therefore the fps can fluctuate quite a bit. However when all comes to blows both will perform the job well and give reasonable results.

yea my main machine is running with the 4690k at the moment. Ive got a replacement 8350 on route which will go back into my sabertooth board and be my 2nd machine that my eldest son uses mainly.
then ive got the phenom x6 1090t which will go into a gigabyte 990x board which ill build back up or sell as a package

Ah the 1090t. I have fond memories of that. Such a good overclocker. Mine is still around somewhere I think :)
mines is currently in the sabertooth board running at 3.6Ghz and running sweet.

it is a great cpu and I was so glad I had it sitting when my 8350 died on me

ive still got another 2 FX chips sitting.. ive got a 6350 and a 6100 I really need to do something with them.
the 6100 has a broken pin.

I thought the old 1090t was a stronger chip than them both though hence it was put into use when the 8350 died.

In some ways it was a stronger chip and way ahead of its time.

I'm currently working on a new amd/msi build theme with a build log coming soon.

Might have to dig out the 1090t and see how it performs next to a 6300. Would be interesting.

To OP did you decide on your chosen route yet?

Cheers bioshock!

I have set one the FX4300 which i am ordering tomorrow and i pick up the new board next week with the 8GB ram (this can be upgraded if it's rubbish ram)

looking forward to having a good(ish) computer again...

What CPU coolers are good for AMD ?

What's your budget? Most coolers will have AMD fittings so that's nothing to worry about. And air or aio?

for an air cooler I would recommend the Cooler Master 212 EVO, excellent bit of kit for the price and will serve you well. If however you become like me and started to worry a little about having a massive slab of weighty metal hanging by four screws into your motherboard then you could go the water cooler route.

An AIO solution is best if you have never used or have interest in custom loops. Good and popular coolers in this regard are the Corsair H80, H100 or their 'i' counterparts and the NZXT Kraken.

Rule of thumb for choosing your water cooling size, your after minimum 120mm per component to be cooled, so in your case 1x CPU so the H80 would be sufficient, the H100 better as it 240mm giving you better cooling efficiency.

Prices of these water coolers can run more expensive when your on a budget and in which case I would recommend them if your after a quieter solution as these are more efficient they can cool the same components whilst have the fans rotate slower thus eliminating your biggest noise producer.

But for a simple Air Cooler that does the job (and very well I might add) then the Cooler Master 212 EVO is a simple solution and very good price at around £25 on OCUK.

This, or the Raijintek Themis if it's in stock. Had my 4690k at 4.6ghz on one of these coolers and temps never went above 65c in stress test! It's an awesome bit of kit.
