Hello,

I live about an hours drive (including picking up people on the way) from Uni and with it being my last year next year I was considering moving out.

Financially, it's a stupid idea. Rent and utilities cost £75 a week, then food and going out more often (about once a week) is the major difference between staying at home and moving out. I think it'll cost me about £75 a week to live plus rent = £150 a week. That's compared to about £50 a week living at home.

Basically, over the 42 week contract I'll spend about £4000 more if I move out.

However, it's not all about the money is it?

Benefits of moving out:
  • I can go out more often - once or twice a week compared to twice a month. Means I don't have to worry if I wanna bring girls home (haha once in a blue moon)
  • I don't have to sit around for 2 or 3 hours waiting for my next lecture. I can just go back to the flat instead of going home and missing the lecture.
  • Library, etc are all close to my flat
  • The whole "experience" of living for yourself

Benefits of staying at home:
  • No financial worries, saving me £4000
  • Nice house I can do what I want in
  • Don't have to worry about cooking my own food or if I have food in

Do any of you live close to your uni? Have you moved out or stayed at home and why?

What would you recommend?

tough one. the whole experience of uni would probably sway me towards the moving out. however is it worth 4 grand?

one other very important point is the potential housemates... if they're goons, no chance :p

I live (home) like 40 odd min drive from my uni and i was thinking about living at home for my second year, mainly as it would be an easy way to save money. But havnt decided fully yet... just have to wait and see.

Move out.

Uni is not all about the qualification it's also about learning to fend for yourself, manage you're money and having a bloody good time.

Thats my opinion, friends from my course who lived at home never had as much fun or "life experience" as those who were living away from home.

I live 35miles, around 40min drive (if good traffic) away from uni.
however.... the miles I would rack up on the car, the repairs and running costs. Also having longer days due to the drive, and missing out on the social aspect
I am at the uni every weekday without fail, I am 99% certain staying at home would be cheaper, but thats being boring:p

100% move out. You're ruining the experience if you're living at home mate. Yeh it does cost extra but the experience gained will be useful later on in life.

Also when you move away from home you have no restrictions, you can be yourself and not have to worry about any parents etc telling you what to do.

Stay at home.

Why spend more money to live in a less quality place? ANd to all those who say you will miss the "experience" of being at uni.All I can say is what tosh, life after uni is infitely more enjoyable.

I stayed at home for my final 2 years (40 minute drive). It allowed me to concentrate more on the work. Breaks between lectures were far more procutive as I would go to the library. All my work was done during these periods meaning when I got home at 4 or 5pm all my work was done leaving evenings completely free.

Had I stayed at uni these breaks between lectures would inevtibaly be wasted avoiding studying, distractiions, neighrbours on BBC etc. .

When I went to Uni, I drew a three hour limit around my house, and then only applied to Uni's outside of that.

I learnt very little in class at Uni, but the experience of moving from a rural home in a nice area, to a big, rough city, and fending for myself was immense. I still have friends who are as bright as I am who live back home, but they have never moved from that comfort zone.

So my advice, move out, you will be poorer financially but so what, there is a hell of a lot more to life than money!

Could you not move into catered halls? I know you only get a room but you get other added benefits like being close to campus, cooked food for you, corridor full of new people etc. It should be a lot cheaper than getting your own place, well it was for me!

Definately move out. You'll never get a real sense of freedom while living with your parents. I lived with my ex and his parents for a while in first year, and they really didn't care what we did/how late we were out etc, but it was still restricting, and they still made most of our meals, bought most of our food and did all the housework.

So long as I have my flat, I will never live with my parents again (or with my partners), although I know they'd rather keep paying for it than let me move back in anyway ;).

Just checked the timetable and if it's the same as this year's third year I'm only in three days a week for the 2nd semester.

It's not my car btw. I pay the guy £10 a week for the lift in in we split parking too. I'd be moving out with people from my course who I already know.

id definitely stay at home - for only being in 3 days a week. If you can cope with the long travel in then its best staying at home. Nothing beats staying at home when you get nice house, own room, good food etc etc. I lived at home for all 3 years of uni but was away for my placement so that made up for living at home. I lived 25mins drive from uni.

I live half hour away from uni. Finish in May and I've lived at home all through it, only there 3 days a week for 1-2 hours a day so it doesn't make financial sense to move out. I don't want to be in debt when I leave uni either.

Had a brand new car last month, wouldn't have got that if I moved out.

i say move out and live in a house share.. uni i not just about studying.. if you live at home.. some miles away.. you will always be thinking, how do i get back.. or my mum is cooking me something and i must get back etc...

you will miss out on the other university life.
