Live Stream of my Bird Box - Bluetits Nesting - Chicks Hatching Now

I always thought Wrens were pretty common. Get a few of the loud buggers in the woods near me. Shame our new garden wont be that big as I don't see the point of putting one in there if it's not big. They'd have to be pretty bold to eat from it

What is the surrounding cover like? They'll still come as long as they can get back to a relatively bushy area reasonably quickly.

My bird population has dwindled in the last recent years. Sometimes I just feel like Im fattening up birds for the local sparrowhawk and cats.

I used to have a massive group of sparrows (Id say 30-50) and quite a big group of bluetits and various other kinds of ****. Now its quite small groups.

Robins are quite fearless. I have one in my garden that'll come within inches of my boots when I'm digging. He's obviously looking for worms etc but it's nice when he gets up close.

Winter especially don't see them much in the summer but in wintertime they'll follow you around especially when digging or otherwise disturbing the soil. Digging out the compost heap they'll spend the entire afternoon watching you and dive down to pick up bugs even right under your fork.

I found a load of cockchafer grubs while digging to plant a load of new stuff in the garden. I had to look them up to make sure the grubs weren't for some endangered species or something.

Anyways I stuck a few in the feeder tray and they were gone in seconds once I walked back in the house.

I do feel a little bad about it though :(

Anyways I'm really enjoying my chilled evenings sitting under the parasol watching all the birds feed in the garden. They are all getting pretty bold and as long as I stay seated they don't seem that bothered :)

Sitting in the garden yesterday afternoon watching the Sparrows when suddenly something quite large swooped into the garden and scared the crap out of them. I was pretty much thinking "OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL IS THAT" as it landed on the fence about 12 feet away from me. Consulting my books it seems it was a female Sparrowhawk. Never seen one of those in my garden ever before!

Making the garden more bird friendly has been one of the best investments I've made in ages. Still failing to attract Blackbirds and Blue **** at the moment though. :(

bit of a bump on this but I saw something which I thought was really cool yesterday. Saw a kingfisher diving for it's food whilst I was having a little walk along the river. It's only a couple of terrible quality stills I managed to get as I fumbled around trying to record a video.

Was amazing seeing how agile it was in the air. I knew they would dive from perches just above the water but first noticed him diving off of a tree which must've been about 10'. Then I saw him hover a few times in the air before diving back into the water and going on down the river. No idea if he was successful or not but was really cool to see.

Lucky - I've never managed to see one ever!

I think maybe we need an "OcUK Twitchers" thread. :D

Aw man that’s a whole lotta sad right there. Popped in and out but then it somehow slipped my mind. Just came in to check out how it was all going and seen this is the outcome. Such a shame but as has been said plenty of times already, Mother Nature can be a cruel bitch sometimes. But thank you for all the effort you went to to get get this set up and shared.

Thanks for the link.
Just installed a pond over winter and gf bought me a trap can that I'll install near it but also going to get some more bird box's up in the garden and some on the house wall high up so want some cameras in them now.

We have one bird box that didn't get any use last year but last week we had a lot of interested bluetit going in for a look.
Also we must have had about 40 goldfinches in our tree on Saturday, was unreal.

Also managed accidentally to save a dove from a sparrow hawk in the local co op car park bush, just caught something in the corner of my eye turned around and I just saw two massive orange eyes with its wings doing that death shroud, it then flew off and the dove lived another day.

Love to capture the sparrow hawk in my garden on camera, impressive birds.

Definitely need a bird spotting thread.

I've fitted an external camera this year so we can watch the comings & goings :)

It's been very busy today with prospective tenants

I might be a bit late but I have a couple of bird boxes to put up. Is it best to help out putting some shredded paper or something in as a base bedding?

I'm thinking maybe I will get tenants for 2nd clutches.

Id have thought it would be best to leave it empty or they might think it is already occupied. Leave it all near by though so they can get it. I usualy put out long haired dog hair.

Good shout, I can leave grass clippings, twigs and stuff around at least. Cheers.

Would be interesting to see if anyone else has tried a "starter" nest though. :)
