A £300m takeover of Liverpool FC has been described by former owner Tom Hicks as "an organised conspiracy".
Because English football is the preeminent global sports entertainment product, second to none. People such as Abramovic, NESV etc aren't buying in for what it's worth today rather than what it will be worth in the future. There's a massive existing market and a huge untapped market that's hooked on football and English football in particular.
One day the leading football brands will be huge revenue generating machines. You only have to visit far eat Asia to realise this. At some point in the not to distant future the top echelons of European football (think European super league) will be established and the money will start flowing in. Liverpool FC is a rare chance to buy into to that table and it's an attractive prospect to an investor.
Add to that the fact NESV got a very good deal and you can see why people buy football clubs.
Understand but how much money have and will they continue to sink in before this 'untapped' market pays dividends?
I tell you when never.
They watch the games for free and knock off their own shirts. They have no qualms what so ever ripping off the west and will continue to do so. It doesn't matter if there are 4 gazillion in the asian market if they don't pay for it.
One down one to go. Egos need to follow Hodgson out the door in January.Breaking news: Christian Purslow stands down as Liverpool MD. Will remain non-exec director and Special Advisor to new owners.
He was appointed to find new investment into the club. He's stepping down having achived his original objective. Good luck to him in the future.
Other than his appointment, you couldn't be more wrong.
He was appointed to find new investment to pay down the debt by the deadline to refinance with RBS back in Easter. He failed. As a result RBS extended the deal for a further 6 months and appointed Broughton to sell the club.
Despite him only being appointed to find investment and having no past experience in football, Purslow took it upon himself to make the 2 biggest footballing decisions the club has had in the past 6 years (sacking Benitez and then appointing Hodgson), as well as interfering with transfer dealings.
The man is a weasel that was trying to play God. He even took credit for the Standard Chartered sponsorship deal that Ian Ayre secured after monts of work, despite only being at the club a matter of weeks.
My original post did contain pretty much what you've said but I've decided I need to move on and although I don't forgive Purslow's role in getting rid of Rafa I'm willing to wish him well for the future for finding us new owners.
He is still at the club though, in fact he got a promotion. He will be installed as Non Exec Director and Advisor to the owners![]()
